IKA ElectraSyn 2.0 Package, Electrochemistry System, Potentiostat and Galvanostat, 0020008980

Product information "IKA ElectraSyn 2.0 Package, Electrochemistry System, Potentiostat and Galvanostat, 0020008980"

The IKA ElectraSyn 2.0 Package (MPN 0020008980) combines a potentiostat, a galvanostat and a compact magnetic stirrer in a single benchtop unit and was developed together with Professor Phil S. Baran of the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla. Instead of improvised setups made of individual components, the system uses standardised reaction vessels (vials) with a defined electrode spacing, which makes electrochemical syntheses in the laboratory considerably more reproducible. As the base version of the ElectraSyn 2.0 series, it is suitable for laboratories entering preparative electrochemistry without immediately depending on the more comprehensive CV electrode set of the pro Package. This makes it possible to move from improvised laboratory setups to a standardised system without extensive prior knowledge of electrochemistry.

Constant current and constant voltage mode in one unit

The ElectraSyn 2.0 Package covers both the galvanostat mode (constant current) and the potentiostat mode (constant voltage) and integrates a magnetic stirrer with a speed range of 50 to 1,500 revolutions per minute for a stirring volume of up to 0.1 litres of water. A TFT display shows the relevant process parameters during the reaction, so the experiment can be monitored at any time. An integrated stirring system takes care of homogenisation in the reaction vessel, without a separate magnetic stirrer having to be set up in addition.

Basic CV functions already in the base unit

Even without the separate CV electrode set of the pro Package, the ElectraSyn 2.0 Package already offers simple cyclic voltammetry functions with which the electrochemical properties of a substrate can be roughly estimated. For a complete CV analysis with glassy carbon, platinum and reference electrode, however, the separate CV electrode set is required, which is not included in the base unit and can be retrofitted if needed. For many routine applications in which the reaction conditions are already known from previous experiments, the simpler range of functions of the base unit is nevertheless sufficient.

Standardised vials instead of round-bottom flasks and crocodile clips

The electrodes are screwed directly into the lid of the reaction vessel, so the spacing and geometry between working and counter electrode remain identical with every batch. This reduces typical sources of error in improvised setups, such as wobbly clamp connections or different electrode spacings between two experiments. A single vial with a volume of 10 millilitres is included in the scope of delivery, and further vial sizes are available separately.

Compact benchtop unit for the workstation

With dimensions of 130 x 150 x 250 millimetres, the ElectraSyn 2.0 Package takes up very little space on the laboratory bench. The degree of protection IP 40 according to DIN EN 60529 protects the housing against the ingress of larger foreign objects, and the internal power supply operates with a supply voltage of 48 volts direct current. This means the device can also be set up in smaller laboratories or directly next to an existing workstation, without having to allow additional space for separate power supplies or cable connections.

App connection for reaction monitoring

The free IKA ElectraSyn App can be used to monitor running reactions and CV graphs and to export experimental data. The app is available for iOS and Android and also provides access to video tutorials and information on available software updates for the device.

Entry to the ElectraSyn platform with an expansion option

Anyone starting with the ElectraSyn 2.0 Package can later upgrade to the more comprehensive CV set of the pro Package if needed, or extend the system with accessories such as the IKA Carousel for parallel batches in several vials. The base station remains the same, so a changeover does not involve buying a completely new device but is limited to purchasing the respective accessories.

Typical applications

The ElectraSyn 2.0 Package is suitable as a compact entry into preparative electrochemistry in the laboratory, wherever a complete CV electrode set is not yet required:

  • Electrochemical syntheses with constant current or constant voltage without a complex home-built setup
  • Academic teaching in which the basics of galvanostat and potentiostat operation are taught
  • First exploratory CV measurements for a rough assessment of the redox behaviour of a substrate
  • Screening of simple reaction conditions on a small scale before a more extensive series of experiments
  • Entry into electrosynthesis for research groups that initially want to cover their needs without the CV electrode set of the pro Package
  • Practical courses and further training in which the basic handling of an electrochemical reaction system is taught
  • Extending an existing laboratory workstation with a standardised electrosynthesis station
  • Comparative preliminary investigations before deciding on retrofitting the CV electrode set
