KERN OKM 173 Metallurgical Microscope, reflected light, trinocular, infinite-corrected optics
Geometric Optics of Metallurgical Reflected-Light Microscopy In materials science fractography, metallurgical quality control and the examination of opaque (light-impermeable) semiconductor structures, conventional transmitted-light microscopes fail due to the total physical absorption of photons within the solid. The KERN OKM 173 is designed as a high-precision metallurgical epi-illumination microscope. In this complex optical setup, the objective lens also functions as a condenser. The integrated 30-watt halogen light source emits a continuous, broadband spectrum of photons. This light is precisely directed into the optical axis via a partially transparent beam splitter in the microscope stand, focused onto the sample through the objective lens and reflected by the metallic solid-state surface. The reflected light passes through the objective lens once more and produces, in the trinocular tube, an image of the microscopic grain structures, voids or microcracks that is exceptionally high-contrast and free of artefacts. Physical superiority of the infinity-corrected optical path The metrological heart of the OKM 173 is its infinity-corrected optical system (Infinity Optics). In contrast to finite optical systems with a fixed tube length (e.g. 160 mm), with infinity optics the light rays emerge from the objective as parallel beams. Only a specially calculated tube lens in the microscope head focuses these parallel photons into a real intermediate image. This physical space occupied by the parallel rays between the objective and the tube lens is of essential importance: it allows additional optical components – such as polarising filters, analysers or DIC prisms – to be introduced without causing a shift in the optical focal length, spherical aberrations (aberrations) or microscopic ghost images. Polarisation optics and anisotropy analysis Particularly with reflective metallic surfaces or polished micrographs, unpolarised halogen light often leads to severe flare, which masks the finest phase boundaries in the metal lattice. The OKM 173 is therefore equipped as standard with a high-performance polarisation and analyser unit. The polariser forces the transverse electromagnetic light waves into a defined plane of oscillation. Reflection off the anisotropic crystal structure of the metal sample specifically alters the polarisation state of the light. The downstream analyser physically blocks out interfering specular reflections and makes optical stress-induced birefringence, grain boundaries and heterogeneous alloy phases visible with maximum microscopic contrast. Planachromatic optics and digital image conversion To reproduce the absolutely flat polished surfaces typical of metallurgy without geometric errors, the system is equipped with planachromatic objectives. These highly complex lens systems correct chromatic aberration for two spectral colours and physically flatten the image field so that both the centre and the extreme peripheral areas of the solid-state sample are simultaneously in absolutely sharp focus. The trinocular Siedentopf tube also enables simultaneous binocular visual inspection by the user and the loss-free coupling of the photon flux to a digital microscope camera (C-mount). This is essential for comprehensive digital documentation and software-based metrology in certified laboratories. Technical details Optical system: Infinity-corrected (Infinity Optics) Microscope type: Metallurgical epi-illumination microscope Tubus design: Trinocular (Siedentopf), 30° inclination, 360° rotatable Illumination type: 30 W halogen epi-illumination (continuously dimmable) Optical path: Partially transparent mirror for coaxial illumination Objectives: Planachromatic LWD (Long Working Distance) optics Standard magnifications: 5x, 10x, 20x, 50x (plan objectives) Eyepieces: HWF 10x / Ø 18 mm (with dioptre adjustment on both tubes) Optical contrast enhancement: Includes polariser and analyser unit Mechanical cross-table: Large surface area (approx. 200 x 150 mm) for solid workpieces Focusing: Coaxial coarse and fine adjustment with mechanical stop Camera output: C-mount adapter for digital image capture Power supply: Integrated mains power supply (230 V) Scope of delivery 1 x KERN OKM 173 metallurgical microscope (stand and tube) 4 x Planachromatic LWD objectives (5x, 10x, 20x, 50x) 2 x HWF 10x wide-field eyepieces 1 x polarisation and analyser unit 1 x 30-watt halogen replacement bulb 1 x C-mount camera adapter 1 x dust cover and mains cable 1 x Detailed operating instructions Individual requirements & accessories The trinocular optical path of the OKM 173 is mechanically and optically designed to accommodate a high-resolution digital microscope camera (e.g. KERN ODC series with CMOS sensor). To carry out metrological length or angle measurements on metal structures via the software, such a camera, in conjunction with an object micrometre for calibration, is essential. For analyses requiring extremely high magnification, the system can also be upgraded with a plan-achromatic 100x LWD objective. KERN OBE 132 Transmitted-light microscope, trinocular, 40x–1000x, 3W LED, achromatic
The modern all-rounder for training and everyday laboratory use The KERN OBE 132 sets new standards in the category of robust educational microscopes. As a trinocular variant of the popular OBE-1 series, this transmitted-light microscope has been specially designed for use in secondary schools, vocational colleges and training centres, as well as for routine laboratory applications. It combines an exclusive, dynamic design with the durability and ergonomics that are essential for daily, intensive use. For anyone looking for a reliable instrument that not only delivers brilliant images but also offers the option of digital documentation, the OBE 132 is the perfect choice. Trinocular tube: Ready for the digital world The standout feature of the OBE 132 is its trinocular microscope head. In addition to the two eyepieces for stereoscopic viewing, this model features a third, vertical optical path. This allows for the permanent connection of a microscope camera (C-mount adapter available separately). This is of inestimable value, particularly in teaching or training: the live image can be transmitted to a monitor, projector or PC, enabling an entire group to view and discuss the specimen at the same time. Documenting findings or creating training materials thus becomes child’s play. The tube itself is designed as an innovative ‘butterfly’ tube. This not only allows for quick adjustment of the interpupillary distance but also ensures an ideal viewing angle (30° tilt), which effectively prevents neck pain during prolonged use. The head can also be rotated through 360°. High-performance optics and illumination The KERN OBE 132 is equipped with four high-quality, achromatic objectives (4x, 10x, 40x and 100x). In combination with the HWF 10x/18 mm wide-field eyepieces, you can achieve a magnification range from 40x to 1000x. The 100x objective is designed for oil immersion (immersion oil required), enabling the observation of the finest structures, such as bacteria or details in blood smears. To prevent damage, both the 40x and 100x objectives are mounted on spring-loaded mounts. Illumination is provided by a modern, high-performance 3W LED. This ensures excellent, bright illumination of the specimen at a colour temperature similar to daylight. A key advantage of LED technology over halogen lamps is its long service life and the absence of heat generation – your samples are not ‘cooked’, which is particularly important when examining living organisms. The brightness is, of course, infinitely adjustable. Precise mechanics and well-designed features The full-featured mechanical cross-table ensures the precise positioning of your specimens. Using the ergonomically positioned, coaxial control knobs (for the x and y axes), you can move the specimen with millimetre precision without having to take your eyes off the eyepieces. Focusing is also achieved via a coaxial coarse and fine focus control on both sides, which allows for rapid yet highly precise focusing. Beneath the stage is a height-adjustable Abbe condenser (N.A. 1.25) with an iris diaphragm. This allows you to optimise the light path using Köhler illumination (within a fixed frame) and to perfectly adjust the contrast to the specimen in question. Another practical feature for everyday laboratory use: a large storage compartment is integrated into the rear of the unit. The mains cable can be stowed away quickly and securely here after use – this keeps the cabinet tidy and prevents cable tangles during transport. Technical specifications in detail Optical system: Finite Tubus: Trinocular (Siedentopf, butterfly design), 30° inclined, 360° rotatable Light distribution: 20:80 (visual : camera) Eyepieces: HWF 10x / Ø 18 mm (wide-field) Objectives: Achromatic 4x, 10x, 40x (spring-loaded), 100x (spring-loaded, oil) Objective turret: 4-position, tilted forwards Magnification: 40x – 1000x Stage: Mechanical cross-table (125 x 115 mm), travel range 50 x 70 mm Condenser: Abbe N.A. 1.25 (height-adjustable) with iris diaphragm Focusing: Coaxial coarse and fine adjustment Illumination: 3W LED (transmitted light), continuously dimmable Power supply: Mains adaptor (external) Dimensions (W x D x H): 360 x 150 x 320 mm Weight: approx. 4.6 kg Contents 1 x KERN OBE 132 microscope (trinocular) 2 x HWF 10x eyepieces 4 x objectives (4x/10x/40x/100x) 1 x dust cover 1 x power supply 1 x user manual Customised requirements & accessories Would you like to document your work? KERN OBT 106 School Microscope, monocular, 40x–400x, LED transmitted light, battery-powered
The ideal introduction to microscopy: the KERN OBT 106 for schools and training The KERN OBT 106 is a high-quality school microscope that has been specially developed for modern biology lessons in primary and secondary schools, as well as for ambitious hobbyists. As part of the tried-and-tested OBT 1 series from KERN Optics, it combines intuitive operation with robust mechanics and optical performance that will inspire pupils’ lasting enthusiasm for the microcosm. Unlike simple toy microscopes, this is a fully-fledged optical instrument manufactured to the standards of professional laboratory microscopes, yet perfectly tailored in terms of function and ergonomics to the needs of beginners. Brilliant optics for fascinating insights At the heart of the KERN OBT 106 lies the achromatic optical system. Equipped with three high-quality objectives (4x, 10x and 40x) and a 10x wide-field eyepiece, the microscope covers a magnification range from 40x to 400x. This range is regarded as the ‘gold standard’ for school teaching. It enables detailed observation of classic specimens: from the structure of an onion skin cell to the leg hairs of a housefly, right through to the fascinating organisms found in pond water (paramecia, rotifers). The 40x objective is spring-mounted (retractable). This is a crucial safety feature in school settings: should the stage be raised too high by accident, the spring-mounted front lens gives way. This effectively prevents damage to the expensive specimen or the front lens of the objective – a common problem with inexperienced users, which has been resolved through the design of this instrument. Ergonomics and handling in the classroom The OBT 106’s tube is monocular and tilted at an ergonomic viewing angle of 45°. This allows for a relaxed posture even during longer observation sessions. A particular advantage for group work: the microscope head can be rotated a full 360°. This means the microscope can simply be turned on the table to show the adjusted image to a neighbouring student or the teacher, without having to move the entire stand. This prevents the specimen from slipping and promotes collaborative learning. Focusing is achieved via a coaxial drive on both sides for coarse and fine adjustment. This arrangement, in which the coarse and fine drives are aligned on a single axis, is intuitive to use and allows the focal plane to be located quickly, as well as enabling precise refocusing at high magnifications. The fixed stage (110 x 100 mm) is fitted with two robust specimen clamps that securely hold the slide in place. Innovative LED illumination and portable use A highlight of the KERN OBT 106 is its modern 1W LED illumination. Compared with conventional halogen lamps, LED technology offers significant advantages for school use: the light is bright white and colour-accurate, which makes it easier to identify cell structures. Furthermore, it generates almost no heat, meaning that living specimens (e.g. aquatic organisms) do not dry out or die. The lighting is infinitely dimmable, allowing the brightness to be optimally adjusted to suit the specimen in question. Image quality is enhanced by a condenser (N.A. 0.65) fitted beneath the table, featuring a rotatable pinhole disc. Simply turning the disc significantly increases the contrast, which leads to a real ‘aha moment’, particularly with transparent or unstained specimens. For maximum flexibility in the classroom or on field trips, the OBT 106 is equipped with rechargeable batteries. It can therefore be operated independently of the mains supply, thereby avoiding the risk of tripping over cables in the classroom. Detailed technical specifications Optical system: Finite Tube: Monocular, 45° inclined, 360° rotatable Eyepiece: Wide-field WF 10x / Ø 18 mm (secured against removal) Objectives: Achromatic 4x, 10x, 40x (spring-loaded) Objective turret: 3-position, tilted forwards Magnification: 40x, 100x, 400x Focusing: Coaxial coarse and fine adjustment Stage: 110 x 100 mm with 2 specimen clamps Condenser: Fixed (N.A. 0.65) with pinhole disc for contrast enhancement Illumination: 1W LED (transmitted light), continuously dimmable Power supply: Mains adaptor + integrated rechargeable batteries (cordless operation possible) Dimensions (W x D x H): 195 x 147 x 325 mm Net weight: approx. 2.5 kg Contents 1 x KERN OBT 106 microscope 1 x WF 10x eyepiece 3 x objectives (4x/10x/40x) 1 x dust cover 1 x power supply unit (including rechargeable batteries in the unit) 1 x user manual Individual requirements & accessories To make the most of this microscope’s potential, we recommend suitable accessories such as microscope slides, cover glasses or ready-to-use specimen sets to get you started straight away. KERN OPO 185 Polarising Microscope, transmitted and reflected light, infinity
KERN OPO 185: The flexible, high-end polarising microscope for professionals The KERN OPO 185 (MPN OPO 185) is the flagship model of the Professional Line POL. It has been specially developed for demanding analyses of materials with optical anisotropy, such as those encountered in mineralogy, petrography, crystallography and materials testing. This instrument impresses with its enormous flexibility: it combines powerful LED reflected and transmitted light illumination with high-quality infinity optics. Whether transparent thin sections or opaque ores – the OPO 185 delivers razor-sharp, high-contrast images. Maximum power: 5W LED & 5-position objective turret Unlike basic models, the OPO 185 features two extremely bright 5-watt LED illuminators. Reflected light: Ideal for opaque specimens. Transmitted light: For classic transparent specimens. Both units are infinitely dimmable and ensure long-lasting, colour-faithful illumination (Köhler illumination in transmitted light with an adjustable Abbe condenser 0.9/0.13 ‘Swing Out’). The 5-position objective turret is fitted with five specialised, tension-free Infinity Plan objectives (4x, 10x, 20x, 40x, 50x), which cover an enormous magnification range. Fully equipped for polarisation analysis The KERN OPO 185 leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to crystal optical examinations: Bertrand lens: Permanently integrated and focusable for konoscopy (observation of axial images). Compensators: A complete set of sliders (lambda, lambda/4, quartz wedge) is included to determine phase differences. Precision stage: The large specimen stage is mounted on ball bearings, rotates through 360° and features 1° graduations as well as 6' fine graduations with a locking function. Trinocular tube for documentation The Siedentopf tube is trinocular. This means you can observe comfortably with both eyes (30° viewing angle, dioptre adjustment on both sides) whilst simultaneously connecting a microscope camera via the third optical path. This makes the OPO 185 the perfect workstation for laboratories that produce reports or conduct training sessions. Areas of application Geology & Mineralogy: Identification of mineral phases and rock structures. Industry: Analysis of stress cracks in glass or plastics (stress optics).
