WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7, Calibration Standard Series, (50 ml – 1000 ml)
WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7 (108802, 108702, 108708), defined as a high-precision electrochemical calibration standard, provides the metrological foundation for the validation of pH measurement chains in pharmaceutical analysis, biotechnology research and industrial quality assurance. In chemical metrology, a pH value of 7.00 represents the electrical zero point (isopotential point) of most commercially available pH electrodes. From a physico-chemical perspective, the effectiveness of this buffer solution is based on a precisely balanced phosphate buffer system consisting of dihydrogen phosphate (H₂PO₄⁻) and hydrogen phosphate (HPO₄²⁻). This system utilises chemical equilibrium to neutralise external acidic or basic influences, thereby maintaining the hydrogen ion activity at a constant level over a wide range. For procurement professionals in the pharmaceutical industry and research, the reliability of this zero point is an essential prerequisite for investment security, as it forms the basis for the linear calculation of the slope across the entire measurement range. Thermodynamics of ion activity and temperature coefficients The thermodynamics of the WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7 are characterised by a strictly defined temperature dependence of the dissociation constant. As the pH value is physically defined as the negative decimal logarithm of the H+ activity, changes in temperature affect the chemical equilibrium via the kinetic energy of the system. The TEP 7, TPL 7 and STP 7 variants feature a detailed temperature table, printed on the label, covering the range from 0 °C to 95 °C. This metrological precision is of fundamental importance for modern pH metres with automatic temperature compensation (ATC) in order to calculate the Nernst factor physically correctly and minimise measurement uncertainty. In industrial process analysis, where measurements are often taken far from the standard temperature of 25 °C, this documented temperature coefficient guarantees the full traceability of results to national primary standards. Variant-specific kinetics and application profiles (STP, TPL, TEP) The range of container sizes – 50 ml (STP 7), 250 ml (TPL 7) and 1000 ml (TEP 7) – allows for specific adaptation to the respective laboratory kinetics and sample throughput. The STP 7 variant (108708), supplied in a 50 ml bottle, is ideally designed for mobile field use or for laboratories with low throughput, in order to minimise the time the opened container is left open and thus the risk of carbonation due to atmospheric CO₂. The standard 250-ml TPL 7 (108802) is the universal workhorse for daily routine calibration in university education and research. For high-throughput environments in pharmaceutical production, the 1-litre variant TEP 7 (108702) offers a highly efficient solution for supplying automated calibration stations. Each variant is subject to the same stringent electrochemical specifications, enabling easy scaling of laboratory processes without compromising analytical integrity. Material science of the barrier layer and storage stability A critical quality attribute of the WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7 is the chemical composition of the storage containers. The bottles are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which provides an excellent diffusion barrier against atmospheric gases. The ingress of carbon dioxide would physically shift the pH value into the acidic range via the formation of carbonic acid (H₂CO₃), which would lead to significant calibration errors, particularly in the neutral pH range. The stabilised matrix of the WTW buffer solutions also prevents microbiological growth without altering the surface tension of the electrode’s glass membrane. For pharmaceutical buyers, this long-term stability is a key factor in reducing TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), as the solutions exhibit a metrological drift of less than 0.01 pH units over their entire service life, provided that the handling instructions are followed. Electrochemical metrology and compliance in quality assurance Finally, the use of the WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7 ensures compliance with the highest regulatory standards, such as GMP, GLP and ISO 17025. When calibrating a measuring chain, the buffer solution is used to determine the asymmetry voltage. The use of technical buffers in accordance with DIN 19267 ensures a high degree of comparability of measured values between different laboratory sites. The solution’s optimised ionic strength reduces the electrode’s response time, which enhances efficiency, particularly in diagnostics and time-critical process controls. By choosing the WTW buffer series, laboratories are investing in a tried-and-tested system solution that harmonises physical excellence with the practical requirements of modern quality management. Technical Details Thermodynamics & Chemical Specifications Nominal pH value (at 25 °C): 7.00 Measurement uncertainty: ± 0.03 pH Buffer system: Phosphate buffer (based on KH₂PO₄ / Na₂HPO₄) Temperature range: 0 °C to 95 °C (with documented table of values) Kinetics: Rapid potential stabilisation through optimised ionic conductivity Metrology & Control Engineering Conformity: Complies with the requirements for technical buffers in accordance with DIN 19267 Traceability: Directly traceable to NIST / PTB primary standards Calibration function: Determination of zero point and asymmetry voltage Stability: Microbiologically stabilised, CO₂-inhibited Materials Science & Variants – Dimensions Container material: High-density polyethylene (HDPE) with barrier properties Variant STP 7 (108708): 50 ml bottle (ideal for field use) Variant TPL 7 (108802): 250 ml bottle (standard size for routine use) Variant TEP 7 (108702): 1000 ml bottle (for high-volume use/automation) Environmental conditions & storage Storage temperature: 15 °C to 25 °C (recommended) Shelf life: Typically 24 months from date of manufacture (depending on batch) Physical state: Liquid, odourless, pH-neutral Contents 1 x WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7 (in the selected variant: 50 ml, 250 ml or 1000 ml) 1 x temperature correction table (printed on the label) Important note: Buffer solutions are consumables. To ensure metrological integrity, solution that has been removed must never be returned to the original container. The use of a separate beaker for calibration is physically essential. Individual requirements & accessories For a complete two-point calibration, in addition to the WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7, a second standard (e.g. pH 4.01 TPL 4 or pH 10.01 TPL 10) is required to determine the slope of the electrode. For the maintenance of your pH sensors, we also recommend WTW cleaning solutions (e.g. RL 1 for protein removal) and a 3-molar KCl solution for the proper storage of the reference systems. All supplementary standards and maintenance kits are available via our procurement service.

KERN OKM 173 Metallurgical Microscope, reflected light, trinocular, infinite-corrected optics
Geometric Optics of Metallurgical Reflected-Light Microscopy In materials science fractography, metallurgical quality control and the examination of opaque (light-impermeable) semiconductor structures, conventional transmitted-light microscopes fail due to the total physical absorption of photons within the solid. The KERN OKM 173 is designed as a high-precision metallurgical epi-illumination microscope. In this complex optical setup, the objective lens also functions as a condenser. The integrated 30-watt halogen light source emits a continuous, broadband spectrum of photons. This light is precisely directed into the optical axis via a partially transparent beam splitter in the microscope stand, focused onto the sample through the objective lens and reflected by the metallic solid-state surface. The reflected light passes through the objective lens once more and produces, in the trinocular tube, an image of the microscopic grain structures, voids or microcracks that is exceptionally high-contrast and free of artefacts. Physical superiority of the infinity-corrected optical path The metrological heart of the OKM 173 is its infinity-corrected optical system (Infinity Optics). In contrast to finite optical systems with a fixed tube length (e.g. 160 mm), with infinity optics the light rays emerge from the objective as parallel beams. Only a specially calculated tube lens in the microscope head focuses these parallel photons into a real intermediate image. This physical space occupied by the parallel rays between the objective and the tube lens is of essential importance: it allows additional optical components – such as polarising filters, analysers or DIC prisms – to be introduced without causing a shift in the optical focal length, spherical aberrations (aberrations) or microscopic ghost images. Polarisation optics and anisotropy analysis Particularly with reflective metallic surfaces or polished micrographs, unpolarised halogen light often leads to severe flare, which masks the finest phase boundaries in the metal lattice. The OKM 173 is therefore equipped as standard with a high-performance polarisation and analyser unit. The polariser forces the transverse electromagnetic light waves into a defined plane of oscillation. Reflection off the anisotropic crystal structure of the metal sample specifically alters the polarisation state of the light. The downstream analyser physically blocks out interfering specular reflections and makes optical stress-induced birefringence, grain boundaries and heterogeneous alloy phases visible with maximum microscopic contrast. Planachromatic optics and digital image conversion To reproduce the absolutely flat polished surfaces typical of metallurgy without geometric errors, the system is equipped with planachromatic objectives. These highly complex lens systems correct chromatic aberration for two spectral colours and physically flatten the image field so that both the centre and the extreme peripheral areas of the solid-state sample are simultaneously in absolutely sharp focus. The trinocular Siedentopf tube also enables simultaneous binocular visual inspection by the user and the loss-free coupling of the photon flux to a digital microscope camera (C-mount). This is essential for comprehensive digital documentation and software-based metrology in certified laboratories. Technical details Optical system: Infinity-corrected (Infinity Optics) Microscope type: Metallurgical epi-illumination microscope Tubus design: Trinocular (Siedentopf), 30° inclination, 360° rotatable Illumination type: 30 W halogen epi-illumination (continuously dimmable) Optical path: Partially transparent mirror for coaxial illumination Objectives: Planachromatic LWD (Long Working Distance) optics Standard magnifications: 5x, 10x, 20x, 50x (plan objectives) Eyepieces: HWF 10x / Ø 18 mm (with dioptre adjustment on both tubes) Optical contrast enhancement: Includes polariser and analyser unit Mechanical cross-table: Large surface area (approx. 200 x 150 mm) for solid workpieces Focusing: Coaxial coarse and fine adjustment with mechanical stop Camera output: C-mount adapter for digital image capture Power supply: Integrated mains power supply (230 V) Scope of delivery 1 x KERN OKM 173 metallurgical microscope (stand and tube) 4 x Planachromatic LWD objectives (5x, 10x, 20x, 50x) 2 x HWF 10x wide-field eyepieces 1 x polarisation and analyser unit 1 x 30-watt halogen replacement bulb 1 x C-mount camera adapter 1 x dust cover and mains cable 1 x Detailed operating instructions Individual requirements & accessories The trinocular optical path of the OKM 173 is mechanically and optically designed to accommodate a high-resolution digital microscope camera (e.g. KERN ODC series with CMOS sensor). To carry out metrological length or angle measurements on metal structures via the software, such a camera, in conjunction with an object micrometre for calibration, is essential. For analyses requiring extremely high magnification, the system can also be upgraded with a plan-achromatic 100x LWD objective. Please contact our procurement service at any time regarding the optoelectronic configuration and integration into your quality management system.

IKA C-MAG HS 7 control, magnetic stirrer with heating, ceramic hotplate, 0020002694
Thermodynamic infrared transmission and amorphous ceramic matrix The introduction of extremely high thermal energy into chemical reaction systems requires material architectures that are thermophysically resistant to massive temperature gradients. The IKA C-MAG HS 7 control utilises a monolithic base plate made of glass-hard, amorphous industrial ceramic (180 x 180 mm). This microstructured ceramic plate is not only characterised by absolute chemical inertness towards highly corrosive acids, halogens and bases, but also acts as an excellent infrared transmitter. With a massive heating capacity of 1,000 watts, the system generates surface temperatures of up to 500 °C. The thermal energy is not primarily transferred via pure heat conduction, but is coupled deep into the glass matrix of the reaction vessel with a high proportion of infrared radiation. This minimises thermodynamic latency and enables extremely rapid heating rates for high-boiling-point solvents or melt digestion. Electromagnetic kinematics and rheological trend metrology The physical mixing of structurally viscous fluids up to a macroscopic volume of 20 litres requires a constant, slip-free torque. The system generates a strong alternating electromagnetic field that continuously synchronises the stirring rod within the medium at speeds of 50 to 1,500 revolutions per minute. The electronic motor control compensates for rheological resistance in real time. A fundamental analytical function of this cybernetic model is the measurement of the relative torque trend. The system measures the electromagnetic phase shift induced by changes in the fluid’s viscosity during molecular polymerisation, cross-linking or crystallisation processes, and displays this vector change directly on the high-resolution LCD display. System cybernetics and hardened interface architecture To protect the electronic control unit in toxic or highly corrosive laboratory environments, the entire user interface is isolated behind a monolithic, chemically resistant sheet of real glass (hardened glass). Thermodynamic control within the medium is achieved via a PID cascade control system directly coupled to the supplied PT 1000 temperature sensor, thereby physically eliminating thermal overshoot. An independent, hardware-based safety circuit (continuously adjustable from 100 to 650 °C) and the IKA SmartTemp ® optical warning system guarantee absolute occupational health and safety by warning of latent infrared residual heat from the ceramic matrix, even after the primary power supply has been disconnected. Technical Details Thermodynamics & Heating Technology Heating power: 1000 W Heating temperature range: room temperature to 500 °C Base material: Amorphous industrial ceramic (monolithic) Base dimensions: 180 x 180 mm Heating rate control: Anticipatory PID control (with external PT 1000) Heating plate setting and display resolution: 5 K Setting and display resolution for the medium (via probe): 1 K Temperature control accuracy (with PT 1000 in the fluid): ± 0.5 K Heating rate (1 litre of H₂O in H 1500): 5 K/min Metrology & Control Engineering Viscosity measurement: Relative torque trend measurement (Torque Trend) Timer function: Integrated, cybernetically controllable Temperature sensor interface: PT 1000 (DIN) for ETS-D5 / ETS-D6 or direct connection Sensor failure detection: Error 5 (Sensor in Medium Detection) Cybernetic interface: High-contrast LCD beneath tempered real glass Kinematics & Mechanics Speed range: 50 – 1,500 rpm Motor power input / output: 9 W (mechanical transmission) Speed deviation (under rated load): ± 2 % Maximum stirring volume (based on H₂O): 20 litres Maximum stir bar length: 80 mm (minimum 30 mm) Reversible direction of rotation: Yes, programmable interval operation Safety & environmental conditions Hardware safety circuit: Adjustable from 100 to 650 °C Residual heat indicator: IKA SmartTemp ® (Hot Top Indicator) Permissible ambient temperature range: 5 – 40 °C Permissible relative humidity: max. 80 % Protection class (according to DIN EN 60529): IP 21 Infrastructure, Electrical & Connectivity System dimensions (W x H x D): 220 x 88 x 354 mm Weight: 4.0 kg Voltage / Frequency: 220 – 230 V / 50/60 Hz Power consumption: 1020 W (standby: 2 W) Data interfaces: USB and RS 232 (for firmware updates and LIMS/labworldsoft ® connection) Scope of delivery 1 x IKA C-MAG HS 7 control magnetic stirrer 1 x PT 1000.80 temperature probe (stainless steel) 1 x IKAFLON ® magnetic stirring bar 1 x USB cable and mains lead (Important note: Support rods and sleeves for vertically securing the PT-1000 probe at the centre of the flow vortex are not included in the scope of delivery!) Customised requirements & accessories The C-MAG HS 7 control is a high-performance thermodynamic instrument that achieves its control precision solely through the exact positioning of the sensor system. To complete the PID control loop, the supplied PT-1000 probe must be positioned freely within the liquid phase. For this purpose, vertical locking using an IKA support rod (H 16 V) and cross-shaped sleeve (H 44) is essential. If the probe comes into contact with the hot vessel wall, this would distort the cybernetic control loop. For highly corrosive media that attack stainless steel, we recommend switching to the glass-sheathed PT 1000.70 probe. Please contact our procurement service at any time for the thermodynamically correct configuration.
