Moisture analysis: DBS 60-3 or DLB 160-3A?

Both units weigh the sample, dry it with a 400-watt halogen heater and keep weighing while it dries; the weight loss is the moisture content. They differ in sample size, temperature range and documentation.

According to Kern, the DBS 60-3 is particularly suited to samples with low moisture content. The DLB 160-3A takes larger samples and guides you step by step through the measurement on its graphic display.

Stereo microscope with eyepieces or video microscope with a screen?

With a stereo microscope you look through the eyepieces and see the sample in 3D. The video microscope shows it on a display, which makes it easier to document results or view them with a colleague.

The OZL 465 is the stereo zoom microscope our customers order most often. The OIV 345 has no eyepieces: a 5-megapixel camera shows the sample on the built-in display, no PC required.

Counting: compact counting scale CPE or counting system CCS?

A counting scale weighs a small reference quantity, calculates the piece weight and counts the rest by weight. The lighter the part, the finer the scale's resolution needs to be.

CCS 6K-6 with reference scale

The CCS 6K-6 splits the two steps: the reference scale determines the piece weight, the platform weighs the quantity. The reference value automatically refines itself while counting. This pays off for very light parts in large quantities, for example in electronics manufacturing.

Kern & Sohn has been building scales since 1844. The company is based in Balingen, Germany, and is now run by the eighth generation of the founding family. Which Kern instrument fits? Buying advice by product area

Five product areas with the criteria that decide the choice, plus example instruments from the shop.

Scale

Readability, maximum load, adjustment

Start with the smallest quantity that must be shown reliably, then the largest load including the vessel. Kern states the minimum weight for 0.1 % measurement uncertainty; for the PCB 1000-2 and EWJ 600-2SM that is 20 g. Internal adjustment saves keeping a test weight on site. Verifiable means Kern holds the EU type-examination certificate for the model; verification is usually carried out at the factory on order.

Microscope

Stereo, transmitted light, inverted or video

Stereo for surfaces, components and insects with a 3D impression up to about 45x. Transmitted light for thin specimens on a slide up to 1000x. Inverted for cell cultures in a flask or dish, with the optics sitting below the stage. Video replaces the eyepieces with a display and documents automatically.

Moisture analyser

Sample, temperature, logging

Sample size and weighing range need to match. If you have to document results, look at program memory, GLP logging and the interface.

Counting scale or counting system

Smallest piece weight

The smallest part determines the scale: from 2 g the CPE 6K-3 is enough, from 5 g the CPE 15K-3, below that the CCS 6K-6 system with a 1 mg reference scale. For warehouse and order picking up to 30 kg, there is the CXB 30K2.

Which thickness, which hardness

The JCT 100 measures the coating thickness of a finish on metal. Ultrasound measures the wall thickness of a part accessible from one side only. Shore A for rubber and soft plastics, Leeb for metals.

Frequently asked questions about Kern & Sohn instruments

What is the difference between verifiable and verified?
Verifiable means Kern holds an EU type-examination certificate for the model, for example for the EWJ 600-2SM or the PNJ 3000-2M. A scale only becomes verified after conformity assessment under Directive 2014/31/EU, which is ordered together with the scale at the factory. Verification cannot be added afterwards. These rules concern German and EU legal-for-trade regulations (Eichrecht); if you are based outside Germany, please check the requirements with your own national weights-and-measures authority. In Germany, verification is required among other things in commercial transactions where the price is determined by weight, in pharmacies, for prepacked goods, for analyses in medical and pharmaceutical laboratories, and in medicine when weighing patients. Verified scales must also be re-verified at regular intervals; the deadline is set by the relevant authority. We are happy to help with choosing the right instrument either way.
What is included in a DAkkS calibration certificate?
The Kern calibration laboratory (accreditation D-K-19408-01-00) checks repeatability, indication error and off-centre loading; the measurement points follow EURAMET cg-18. The certificate states the measurement uncertainty of the individual scale and is recognised internationally. How often to recalibrate is set by the operator's own quality management. We order the certificate together with the instrument; the article number is shown on most product pages.
How long is the Kern & Sohn warranty?
24 or 36 months depending on the instrument; the figure is shown on every product page. For the Sauter JCT 100, TB 200-0.1US-RED and HBA 100-0, Sauter offers an extension for an additional fee.
What is the Kern Universal Port (KUP)?
A socket on IoT-line scales such as the PCB 1000-2. Interface adapters for RS-232, USB, Ethernet, WiFi or Bluetooth simply plug in. With the KUP-13 extension box, up to three adapters run in parallel. The BalanceConnection software transfers weighing values into Excel or Access.
Are spare parts and repairs available?
For the spare parts service, Kern & Sohn states shipping within 48 hours plus transport, together with a repair service with status tracking. Tell us the instrument and serial number, and we will ask Kern for the status or the right spare part on your behalf.
How fast is delivery?
As things stand, Kern lists most of the promotional instruments as available from stock. We confirm the delivery time for your order on request, including for orders placed before year end.
