WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7, Calibration Standard Series, (50 ml – 1000 ml)
WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7 (108802, 108702, 108708), defined as a high-precision electrochemical calibration standard, provides the metrological foundation for the validation of pH measurement chains in pharmaceutical analysis, biotechnology research and industrial quality assurance. In chemical metrology, a pH value of 7.00 represents the electrical zero point (isopotential point) of most commercially available pH electrodes. From a physico-chemical perspective, the effectiveness of this buffer solution is based on a precisely balanced phosphate buffer system consisting of dihydrogen phosphate (H₂PO₄⁻) and hydrogen phosphate (HPO₄²⁻). This system utilises chemical equilibrium to neutralise external acidic or basic influences, thereby maintaining the hydrogen ion activity at a constant level over a wide range. For procurement professionals in the pharmaceutical industry and research, the reliability of this zero point is an essential prerequisite for investment security, as it forms the basis for the linear calculation of the slope across the entire measurement range. Thermodynamics of ion activity and temperature coefficients The thermodynamics of the WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7 are characterised by a strictly defined temperature dependence of the dissociation constant. As the pH value is physically defined as the negative decimal logarithm of the H+ activity, changes in temperature affect the chemical equilibrium via the kinetic energy of the system. The TEP 7, TPL 7 and STP 7 variants feature a detailed temperature table, printed on the label, covering the range from 0 °C to 95 °C. This metrological precision is of fundamental importance for modern pH metres with automatic temperature compensation (ATC) in order to calculate the Nernst factor physically correctly and minimise measurement uncertainty. In industrial process analysis, where measurements are often taken far from the standard temperature of 25 °C, this documented temperature coefficient guarantees the full traceability of results to national primary standards. Variant-specific kinetics and application profiles (STP, TPL, TEP) The range of container sizes – 50 ml (STP 7), 250 ml (TPL 7) and 1000 ml (TEP 7) – allows for specific adaptation to the respective laboratory kinetics and sample throughput. The STP 7 variant (108708), supplied in a 50 ml bottle, is ideally designed for mobile field use or for laboratories with low throughput, in order to minimise the time the opened container is left open and thus the risk of carbonation due to atmospheric CO₂. The standard 250-ml TPL 7 (108802) is the universal workhorse for daily routine calibration in university education and research. For high-throughput environments in pharmaceutical production, the 1-litre variant TEP 7 (108702) offers a highly efficient solution for supplying automated calibration stations. Each variant is subject to the same stringent electrochemical specifications, enabling easy scaling of laboratory processes without compromising analytical integrity. Material science of the barrier layer and storage stability A critical quality attribute of the WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7 is the chemical composition of the storage containers. The bottles are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE), which provides an excellent diffusion barrier against atmospheric gases. The ingress of carbon dioxide would physically shift the pH value into the acidic range via the formation of carbonic acid (H₂CO₃), which would lead to significant calibration errors, particularly in the neutral pH range. The stabilised matrix of the WTW buffer solutions also prevents microbiological growth without altering the surface tension of the electrode’s glass membrane. For pharmaceutical buyers, this long-term stability is a key factor in reducing TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), as the solutions exhibit a metrological drift of less than 0.01 pH units over their entire service life, provided that the handling instructions are followed. Electrochemical metrology and compliance in quality assurance Finally, the use of the WTW Technical Buffer Solution pH 7 ensures compliance with the highest regulatory standards, such as GMP, GLP and ISO 17025. When calibrating a measuring chain, the buffer solution is used to determine the asymmetry voltage. The use of technical buffers in accordance with DIN 19267 ensures a high degree of comparability of measured values between different laboratory sites. The solution’s optimised ionic strength reduces the electrode’s response time, which enhances efficiency, particularly in diagnostics and time-critical process controls. By choosing the WTW buffer series, laboratories are investing in a tried-and-tested system solution that harmonises physical excellence with the practical requirements of modern quality management. WTW SenTix ® HW-T 900 Digital IDS pH electrode (1.5 m fixed cable), 103753
The WTW SenTix ® HW-T 900 (MPN 103753) is the digital reference electrode for problematic samples in laboratory analysis. Equipped with intelligent IDS technology, this sensor features an adjustable ground joint. This design solves one of the most common problems in pH measurement: clogged diaphragms in protein-rich, suspended or low-ion media. Simply lifting the movable ground joint increases the electrolyte flow, ensuring contact with the sample even in difficult matrices (e.g. emulsions, cosmetics or boiler feedwater) and easily flushing out contaminants. Signal quality and QSC intelligence Unlike analogue electrodes, the SenTix ® HW-T 900 converts the sensitive measurement signal directly into digital data within the sensor head. This data is transmitted interference-free via the permanently integrated 1.5-metre cable to the IDS analyser (e.g. MultiLine ® or inoLab ®). Thanks to the QSC (Quality Sensor Control) function, the electrode stores its calibration history and serial number internally. In day-to-day laboratory work, this means you can use the electrode on different instruments without having to recalibrate it each time – the calibration data ‘travels’ with the sensor. Design and Maintenance At 165 mm, the glass shaft is slightly longer than that of standard electrodes, which makes it easier to use in taller vessels. A liquid electrolyte (KCl 3 mol/l) serves as the reference system and can be topped up via the side opening. This significantly extends the electrode’s service life compared with gel systems, as the electrolyte supply is not ‘exhausted’ but is replenished. An integrated 30 kOhm NTC sensor simultaneously provides the exact sample temperature for automatic compensation. Technical details pH measurement range: 0.000 … 14.000 Temperature measurement range: 0.0 … 60.0 °C Accuracy (pH): ± 0.004 Diaphragm: Adjustable annular gap (ground joint) Membrane glass resistance: < 600 MOhm Shaft material: Glass Shaft length: 165 mm Shaft diameter: 12 mm Electrolyte: Liquid, KCl 3 mol/l (refillable, silver-ion-free) Temperature sensor: Integrated (NTC 30 kOhm) Connection: 1.5 m fixed cable with waterproof digital connector (IDS) Signal type: Digital (IDS) Contents SenTix ® HW-T 900 electrode (incl. 1.5 m fixed cable) Operating instructions Customised requirements & procurement service Do you actually need this electrode in the plug-in head version (“-P”) for use with wireless modules? WTW SenTix HW-T 900-P digital IDS pH special electrode, ground-glass diaphragm, 103767
The WTW SenTix HW-T 900-P digital IDS pH special-purpose electrode represents a premium-class electrochemical system solution for high-precision pH measurement in particularly demanding, low-ion or highly viscous media. Designed for use in environmental analysis, the chemical industry and in research and development laboratories, this digital glass electrode excels wherever conventional sensors fail due to insufficient electrolyte contact. When measuring in distilled water, boiler feedwater, organic solvents, emulsions or suspensions, the controlled flow dynamics of the reference system are the primary factor in reliably guaranteeing stable potentials and reproducible results. Intelligent IDS sensor technology and digital measurement reliability The mechatronic system architecture of the SenTix HW-T 900-P is based on pioneering IDS (Intelligent Digital Sensors) technology. The highly sensitive analogue voltage signal from the measuring chain is digitised and calibrated directly within the sensor head. This transient signal processing completely eliminates electromagnetic interference, such as that which may be induced by surrounding laboratory equipment, motors or stirring drives. The integrated data memory permanently stores the electrode’s specific serial number as well as a complete history of the last 10 calibrations. The automatic sensor evaluation system QSC (Quality Sensor Control) continuously monitors the electrode’s current condition and displays it on the IDS measuring instrument, guaranteeing the highest level of validity at every test stage. Adjustable ground diaphragm and refillable liquid reference system The materials-science-based design is specifically optimised for problematic sample matrices. The electrode features a precise, adjustable ground diaphragm. This ensures a comparatively high and constant flow rate of the liquid electrolyte, thereby achieving excellent electrical contact with the sample medium. Clogging caused by particles, oils or organic precipitates is prevented by the geometry of the ground core in a way that is gentle on the material. A tried-and-tested liquid electrolyte (3 mol/l KCl) serves as the reference system; it can be easily topped up or completely replaced via a sealable opening on the upper glass shaft. This guarantees an extremely fast response time and prevents measurement drifts even in media with low ion content. Extended glass shaft and universal IDS plug-in head To ensure thermodynamically correct analyses, the SenTix HW-T 900-P features a built-in 30 kOhm NTC temperature sensor, which is integrated directly into the sensor tip and performs automatic, real-time temperature compensation of the pH value. A key design feature is the extended glass shaft, measuring 165 mm in length, which allows deep immersion into specialised sample vessels, necked flasks or reactors. An outstanding ergonomic feature of this variant is the universal IDS plug-in head. The sensor does not have a permanently attached cable; instead, it can be connected to the measuring station with great flexibility, either via an AS IDS connection cable or completely wirelessly via a WTW radio module. This protects the delicate glass system from mechanical stress caused by cable tension and significantly improves the user’s freedom of movement. WTW SenTix Micro 900 digital IDS pH microelectrode, Ø 5 mm, 1.5 m fixed cable, 103751
The WTW SenTix Micro 900 digital IDS pH microelectrode is a specialised, electrochemical system solution for high-precision pH measurement in minimal sample volumes and confined vessel geometries. Designed for demanding applications in biomedical, pharmaceutical and chemical research laboratories, this digital probe enables reliable, process-safe operation directly in NMR tubes, Eppendorf cups or delicate culture vessels. When analysing valuable or rare sample media, reducing the minimum required volume whilst simultaneously eliminating signal interference is the primary criterion for ensuring reproducible measurement results whilst minimising damage to the sample material. The system is fully validated for WTW IDS multi-parameter analysers and supports modern GLP and GMP documentation processes. Intelligent IDS sensor technology and digital measurement stability The mechatronic system architecture of the SenTix Micro 900 is based on innovative IDS (Intelligent Digital Sensors) technology. The highly sensitive analogue voltage signal from the measuring chain is digitised and calibrated directly within the internal sensor assembly. This transient signal processing completely eliminates sources of electromagnetic interference, such as those that may be induced by surrounding laboratory equipment or stirrer drives. An internal data memory permanently stores the electrode’s specific serial number as well as a complete history of the last 10 calibrations. Via the integrated QSC function (Quality Sensor Control), the sensor continuously assesses its current condition and displays this directly on the screen of the connected measuring instrument, which significantly enhances the validity of each individual test step. Delicate glass shaft and refillable liquid delivery system The materials-science-based design is consistently optimised for requirements in the microlitre range. With an extremely slender shaft diameter of just 5 mm, the electrode allows deep, non-contact immersion into the narrowest of sample vessels. A tried-and-tested liquid electrolyte (3 mol/l KCl) serves as the reference system; this can be easily topped up or completely replaced via a sealable opening at the top of the glass shaft. In combination with a precise platinum wire diaphragm, a defined, constant electrolyte flow is achieved. This guarantees a rapid response from the pH-sensitive glass membrane and prevents diffusion potentials and measurement drifts, even in media with low ion content or those that are slightly viscous. Integrated temperature sensor and process-reliable fixed cable connection To ensure thermodynamically correct analyses, the SenTix Micro 900 features a built-in 30 kOhm NTC temperature sensor, which is integrated directly into the sensor tip and performs automatic, real-time temperature compensation of the pH value. The connection to the IDS meter is via a permanently fitted, 1.5-metre-long cable with a waterproof, digital IDS connector. This fixed cable connection offers optimum mechanical protection against the ingress of splash water or moisture in confined laboratory workstations, prevents accidental cable disconnections during the measurement series and ensures uninterrupted signal transmission.
