To store highly sensitive samples safely at extremely low temperatures, you need a piece of equipment you can rely on. The Liebherr SUFsg 5001 is a laboratory ultra-low temperature freezer for the temperature range from -40 °C to -86 °C, which reliably stores even sensitive substances. The unit is particularly robust and user-friendly in design; the housing and door are made of steel, whilst the inner chamber is made of durable stainless steel. The SUFsg 5001 is part of Liebherr’s MediLine series for scientific sample storage and, with a net volume of 477 l, represents the medium-sized model of the three SUFsg sizes stocked by LT Laborhandel. Technology and cooling capacity The temperature is displayed digitally on the outside and can be set within a range of -40 °C to -86 °C, with a permissible ambient temperature of +16 °C to 32 °C. Temperature stability and consistency are tested in accordance with the EN 60068-3 test procedure. The natural refrigerant R 290 is used (charge: 150 g), an environmentally friendly choice with a low global warming potential compared to conventional synthetic refrigerants. In the event of faults, the unit issues visual and audible warnings, ensuring that temperature deviations are immediately detected. Via a retrofittable LAN interface, the ultra-low temperature freezer can, if required, be integrated into an existing laboratory or hospital network and monitored remotely. Interior design and ease of use The stainless steel inner chamber is particularly durable and easy to clean, an important factor for day-to-day laboratory operations, especially when samples are regularly stored and retrieved and the interior therefore needs to be cleaned frequently. Foam-insulated inner doors provide additional stable insulation and temperature control. Four shelves in the freezer compartment ensure organised storage; three of these are height-adjustable and adapt to different container sizes, from small cryoboxes to larger sample containers. The solid aluminium handle with an integrated opening mechanism makes it easy to operate, even whilst wearing gloves, as is common in everyday laboratory work. The door hinge is permanently fitted on the right-hand side. Defrosting is carried out manually, which is standard for an appliance designed for such low temperatures, as automatic defrost cycles at -86 °C would be technically more complex and less suitable for sample safety. The SUFsg 5001 is part of the SUFsg series from LT Laborhandel, which includes two further models, the more compact SUFsg 3501 and the larger SUFsg 7001, each featuring the same MediLine positioning and the same monitoring concept. Installation and connection With external dimensions of 196.6 x 92 x 108.2 cm (H x W x D) and a net weight of 254 kg, the SUFsg 5001 is designed for a permanent installation in the laboratory. The unit operates at 230 V with a connected load of 7.0 A and is supplied with a 2,800 mm long connection cable; a standard laboratory power supply is therefore sufficient. As the unit is 101.7 cm wide when the door is open, sufficient space for manoeuvring should be allowed for at the installation site. Given its weight of 254 kg, a sturdy, level access route is recommended for transporting the unit to its final installation site, particularly if the unit is not to be installed at ground level. For those who wish to store flammable chemicals within easy reach and in an organised manner in the laboratory, whilst ensuring there are no ignition sources inside the unit, the Liebherr SFTfg 1501 is an ATEX-compliant laboratory freezer with an ignition-source-free interior. This model, with a net capacity of 71 litres, comes factory-fitted with three plastic drawers; instead of open shelving, this allows stored items to be kept separate and organised by sample, reagent or batch. Like the shelving version, this variant also complies with cleanroom class ISO 7 and GMP class B. Safety: ignition-source-free interior in accordance with the ATEX Directive The drawer version also features a non-sparking interior and, according to the type plate, is classified as ‘II 3/-G Ex ec IIC T6 Gc/-’ in accordance with the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU; the harmonised standards are EN IEC 60079-0:2018 and EN 60079-15:2010. The unit is authorised for the storage of research samples, reagents, laboratory equipment and chemicals such as ethanol, acetone or isopropanol, provided their flash point is above temperature class T6, i.e. above 85 °C.
