Kern EG 4200-2NM precision balance 4,200 g / 0.01 g

The Kern EG is a precision balance with a tuning fork weighing system and an internal adjustment circuit. Five models weigh from 220 g to 4,200 g and have a readability of 0.001 g or 0.01 g. Three models (EG 220-3NM, EG 420-3NM, EG 620-3NM) have a draught shield and a round weighing pan with a diameter of 118 mm. The two larger models (EG 2200-2NM, EG 4200-2NM) have a rectangular stainless steel plate measuring 180 x 160 mm. All models have a verification value; conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU) is available as an option ex works.

Tuning fork weighing system and adjustment

In the tuning fork principle, a resonant body is set into oscillation electromagnetically in response to the load. According to Kern, the balance shows stable temperature behaviour and a high level of corner-load safety; the stabilisation time is 3 s for all models. Adjustment is carried out with an internal weight and triggered with a rotary knob on the side. A bar graph display shows how much of the weighing range is still available.

Which model fits

If you want to read to 0.001 g, choose one of the three models with a draught shield. Of these, the EG 620-3NM is the only one in accuracy class I (minimum load 0.1 g); the other two belong to class II with a minimum load of 0.02 g. For weighing items up to 4.2 kg with a readability of 0.01 g, the EG 2200-2NM and EG 4200-2NM are suitable. They differ in their weighing range and linearity (± 0.01 g versus ± 0.02 g).

Functions and connections

The balance counts pieces (for the minimum unit weight see the model table), totals counted parts and determines percentages. The units can be switched between, including g, ct, lb, oz, dwt and ozt. According to the data sheet, the range of units is limited for a balance with a conformity assessment. The LCD has digits 17 mm high. Data go to a printer or PC via the standard RS-232 interface. The power supply operates at 220 V to 240 V and 50 Hz; a rechargeable battery is optional (charging time 12 h, operating time 12 h with backlight, switch-off after 3 min in rechargeable battery operation). The plastic housing measures 180 x 235 x 75 mm; with the draught shield, it measures 185 x 235 x 165 mm. The weighing chamber dimensions of the three models with a draught shield are 158 x 130 x 78 mm.

Conformity assessment and calibration

A conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU) is optional. It can only be ordered ex works together with the balance; according to Kern, a subsequent conformity assessment is not possible. To place an order, Kern needs the full address of the installation site. The item number is listed in the model table. A DAkkS calibration certificate can be ordered separately. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.

Warranty

According to Kern & Sohn, these devices come with a 3-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
