Kern PEJ 4200-2M precision balance 4,200 g / 0.01 g

The Kern PEJ is a precision balance with a tuning fork weighing system and a die-cast aluminium housing, which Kern describes for heavy weighing items in the laboratory and in industry. Three models are available: the PEJ 620-3M weighs up to 620 g at 0.001 g (1 mg), the PEJ 2200-2M up to 2,200 g and the PEJ 4200-2M up to 4,200 g, both at 0.01 g. A conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU) is available as an option ex works. With conformity assessment, the PEJ 620-3M has accuracy class I with e = 0.01 g, the two larger models class II with e = 0.1 g.

Tuning fork weighing system and adjustment

All three models have a stabilisation time of 3 s. According to the data sheet, the balance adjusts itself automatically using an internal weight. The internal adjustment does not replace a calibration certificate, which is available separately (see below). The reproducibility is 0.001 g for the PEJ 620-3M and 0.01 g for the other two models.

Display and functions

The fluorescent display is self-illuminating and has 14 mm high digits; according to the data sheet, the user guidance is in English. Six keys operate the balance. A capacity display is provided. In addition, there are piece counting (reference piece counts 5, 10, 30 and 100), percentage determination, the Net-Total totalling function for formulations and a standby function. When weighing with a tolerance range (checkweighing), two upper and two lower limit values are entered using four arrow keys. Kern names portioning, dosing and sorting for this.

For piece counting, the minimum unit weight for the PEJ 620-3M is 1 mg under laboratory conditions and 10 mg under standard conditions; for the PEJ 2200-2M and 4200-2M, it is 10 mg and 100 mg respectively.

Design and weighing chamber

The metal housing measures 220 x 333 x 93 mm. The PEJ 620-3M has a plastic draught shield with a weighing chamber measuring 170 x 150 x 100 mm, a weighing pan of 140 x 120 mm and a height of 186 mm when fitted with the draught shield. It weighs approximately 4.4 kg. The two larger models have a weighing pan of 200 x 200 mm without the draught shield and weigh approximately 6 kg. The spirit level and adjustable feet are used for levelling. For the PEJ 620-3M, an eyelet for below-balance weighing is included in the scope of delivery.

Connections

An RS-232 interface is fitted as standard. A control output as digital I/O with optocoupler is optionally available, only ex works. The plug-in mains adaptor works with 100 V to 240 V AC at 50 / 60 Hz and comes with country adaptors for EU, AUS, UK, US and CH.

• Industrial applications: weighing heavy containers and components up to 4,200 g

• Quality assurance: tolerance testing with limit values and piece counting

The PEJ 620-3M is suitable if milligrams count and the balance is to have a class I conformity assessment. For heavier weighing to 0.01 g, the PEJ 2200-2M and PEJ 4200-2M are the models. Apart from the weighing range, both have the same values.

Conformity assessment and calibration

A conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU) is optional: item no. 965-216 for PEJ 2200-2M and PEJ 4200-2M, item no. 965-201 for PEJ 620-3M. It can only be ordered ex works together with the balance; according to Kern, a subsequent conformity assessment is not possible. To place an order, Kern needs the full address of the installation site. A DAkkS calibration certificate can be ordered separately: item no. 963-127 for PEJ 2200-2M and PEJ 4200-2M, item no. 963-103 for PEJ 620-3M. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.

Warranty

According to Kern & Sohn, these devices come with a 3-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
