Product information "Macherey-Nagel glass fibre filter circles MN GF-3, binder-free, 0.6 µm (Ø 25–270 mm), 240 mm"
Macherey-Nagel describes the MN GF-3 glass fibre filter circles as binder-free glass fibre paper for collecting suspended solids in drinking water and in natural and industrial wastewater. According to the data sheet, they are also intended for laboratory filtration and air sampling. The filter consists of borosilicate glass microfibres, is 0.27 mm thick and weighs 52 g/m². The average retention capacity is 0.6 µm and the maximum temperature is 500 °C.
MN GF-3 or MN GF-1 glass fibre filter circles
According to Macherey-Nagel, the GF-3 retains somewhat better than the GF-1. Both have the same grammage, but differ in retention capacity and filtration time:
| Value | MN GF-3 | MN GF-1 |
|---|---|---|
| Average retention capacity | 0.6 µm | 0.7 µm |
| Grammage | 52 g/m² | 52 g/m² |
| Thickness | 0.27 mm | 0.28 mm |
| Filtration speed | 25 s | 12 s |
| Maximum temperature | 500 °C | 500 °C |
At 0.6 µm, the GF-3 retains more finely than the GF-1 at 0.7 µm. In return, filtration at 25 s takes more than twice as long as with the GF-1 at 12 s. If you need a finer filtrate and accept the longer time, choose the GF-3. The GF-1 is intended for higher speed.
Determining suspended solids
For the determination of suspended solids according to DIN EN 872:2005, Macherey-Nagel names the MN 85/90 BF. At 0.27 mm, the MN GF-3 is considerably thinner than the MN 85/90 BF at 0.51 mm and, at 0.6 µm, has a somewhat coarser retention capacity than the latter at 0.5 µm. If the method does not prescribe a specific filter type, the GF-3 is an option as a binder-free alternative when suspended solids are collected on a glass fibre filter and the residue is dried or ignited in an oven.
Typical applications
- Collecting suspended solids in drinking water and wastewater
- Laboratory filtration requiring a retention capacity of 0.6 µm
- Air sampling with particle collection on the filter
- Gravimetric evaluation of the residue after drying or ignition at up to 500 °C
