A sample of just a few millilitres in a vial, a drop of saliva, an enzyme solution in a micro-vessel: for this, the pH electrode requires a narrow shaft. The WTW SenTix Mic-B is a glass pH microelectrode with a diameter of just 3 mm and a 1 m long fixed cable with a BNC plug. It is refillable and measures from 0 to 14 pH at temperatures ranging from -5 to 100 °C.
3 mm shaft for small volumes
The shaft is 96 mm long, measured from the top edge of the NS 7.5 built-in ground joint. The membrane is cylindrical and also has a diameter of 3 mm. The junction consists of platinum wire; the reference electrolyte is 3 mol/l KCl, Ag+-free. According to the WTW instructions, the membrane resistance is less than 1 GΩ. No temperature sensor is fitted. The temperature is entered on the measuring instrument or recorded using an external sensor. With a diameter of 3 mm, the electrode fits into narrow sample vessels; the immersion depth is limited by the 96 mm shaft length.

Plugs and sister models
The SenTix Mic-B has a permanently attached 1 m cable with a BNC plug. The two microelectrodes in this series differ only in the plug. If you prefer an S7 plug head with a freely selectable cable, the SenTix Mic is a semi-micro version with a stepped shaft and a 5 mm membrane diameter.
Storage and care
Before the first measurement, remove the wetting cap; gas bubbles behind the membrane can be removed by shaking. For short breaks between measurements, immerse the electrode in reference electrolyte (3 mol/l KCl, Ag+-free) with the refill opening left open. Overnight and for longer periods, it stays in the wetting cap, filled with reference electrolyte, with the refill opening closed. According to WTW, storing the electrode in a dry state or in deionised water can cause permanent damage. If the cap has dried out, the electrode needs at least 24 hours in reference electrolyte. As with any pH electrode, strong acids and alkalis, hydrofluoric acid, organic solvents, oils, fats and proteins shorten its service life.
