Product information "Bandelin SONOPULS HD 4200 Ultrasonic Homogeniser, 200 W, 20 kHz, 4200"
Cell disruption, homogenisation or emulsification require more energy at any one point than an ultrasonic bath can provide. The Bandelin SONOPULS HD 4200 therefore uses a sonotrode that is immersed directly into the sample rather than a bath: The generator, transducer, step horn and the TS 113 titanium sonotrode form a ready-to-use set for sample volumes of 20 to 900 millilitres.
Amplitude control with AMPLICHRON circuitry
The amplitude can be adjusted in 1 per cent increments from 10 to 100 per cent; the current value is displayed continuously during operation. The AMPLICHRON circuit maintains a constant amplitude even when the load on the sample varies, which promotes reproducible results across multiple runs. With a nominal ultrasonic power output of 200 watts and a frequency of 20 kilohertz, the GM 4200 generator delivers sufficient energy to reliably process even more viscous samples.
TS 113 sonotrode for volumes up to 900 millilitres
The scope of delivery includes the TS 113 titanium sonotrode, 130 millimetres in length and featuring an M 10 stepped horn connection, designed for sonication volumes of 20 to 900 millilitres. The HD 4000 series covers a total range of 5 to 1,000 millilitres, depending on which of the available sonotrodes with diameters ranging from 3 to 25 millimetres is used. Users who regularly process smaller or larger volumes can change the sonotrode whilst using the same generator.
Pulse mode, timer and batch processing
The time setting ranges from 1 second to 9 hours, 59 minutes and 59 seconds, or continuous operation; an energy display in kilojoules records the energy input per run. The working interval can be set to pulse between 0.2 and 600 seconds, and the rest interval between 0.3 and 600 seconds, ensuring the sample remains cooler between pulses. Nine programme memory slots and batch operation allow several stored sonication programmes to be run automatically one after the other, which is practical for recurring sample series.
Operational safety
According to the user manual, for health reasons it is not permitted to remain in the immediate vicinity of the device for any length of time without hearing protection. The device complies with the CE marking criteria in accordance with the Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and has been tested in accordance with the standards EN 61010-1 (safety) and EN 61326-1 (EMC, Class B in accordance with EN 55011). The device is intended for indoor use at temperatures between 5 and 40 degrees Celsius and at altitudes of up to 2,000 metres; the generator has an IP 30 protection rating in accordance with DIN EN 60529.
Care and maintenance of the sonotrode
According to the operating instructions, SONOPULS ultrasonic homogenisers are maintenance-free, apart from process-related wear and tear on the sonotrodes. Cleaning is usually carried out using an alcohol-soaked, lint-free cloth; for sterilisation, the sonotrode can be unscrewed and sterilised separately. If the sound-emitting surface wears down due to cavitation erosion, it can be re-polished until approximately 1 millimetre of material has been removed; after that, replacement is necessary. For frequent use, it is therefore advisable to keep a stock of the sonotrodes in use.
Typical applications
- Cell lysis in bioanalytics and microbiology
- Homogenisation of tissue and cell samples
- Emulsification and dispersion of small sample volumes
- Ultrasonic treatment of recurring sample series using stored programmes
Frequently asked questions
Is the SONOPULS HD 4200 a medical device?
No, it is not declared as a medical device in the product description; it bears the CE mark in accordance with the Low Voltage, EMC and RoHS Directives.
What sample volumes are possible with the supplied sonotrode?
20 to 900 millilitres with the TS 113 titanium sonotrode; the entire HD 4000 series covers 5 to 1,000 millilitres, depending on the sonotrode.
Is hearing protection required during operation?
Yes; according to the instruction manual, prolonged exposure to the running device without hearing protection is not permitted for health reasons.
Is the device maintenance-free?
Apart from wear and tear on the sonotrodes due to cavitation erosion, yes; no further maintenance is required according to the user manual.
Can the device process several samples automatically in succession?
Yes; thanks to nine programme memory slots and batch mode, stored sonication programmes can be run automatically one after the other.
