Binder BD 023 Standard Incubator with natural convection, 20 l, 9010-0187

Product information "Binder BD 023 Standard Incubator with natural convection, 20 l, 9010-0187"

Where floor space is limited in the laboratory, the Binder BD 023 Standard Incubator is the compact solution for the gentle incubation of smaller sample quantities. With a 20-litre usable volume and a temperature range from +5 °C above room temperature up to 100 °C, the unit covers the standard applications of routine microbiological work without taking up valuable worktop space.

Natural convection for sensitive cultures

The BD 023 operates using free, natural convection rather than a fan. Heat is distributed evenly throughout the interior via the patented APT.line preheating chamber technology, rather than actively circulating the air. This protects sensitive samples such as agar plates or cell cultures, which could dry out or be disrupted by forced airflow. An adjustable exhaust air flap allows the air exchange to be manually adjusted as required, for example to remove metabolic gases from the cultures in a controlled manner without compromising temperature stability.

Safety and operation in everyday laboratory use

An integrated Class 3.1 temperature selector monitor in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring a visual alarm, monitors the setpoint temperature in addition to the control system and triggers an alarm in the event of deviations – an important feature for unattended, extended incubation runs overnight or at the weekend. This safety feature is a particularly relevant factor for GLP-compliant process safety, especially in the case of smaller incubators, which often operate in adjoining rooms without constant supervision. The controller, with its timing functions, allows the management of recurring processes, whilst a programme memory retains parameters once set, meaning that incubation programmes do not need to be re-entered for every use. The full-surface inner door made of safety glass (ESG) enables visual inspection of the samples without having to open the chamber door and disrupt the temperature profile – a simple yet noticeable advantage in everyday laboratory work compared to units without a separate glass door.

Compact design with stackable option

With external dimensions of 435 x 520 x 495 mm (W x D x H) and a weight of 27 kg, the BD 023 fits even on narrower laboratory benches or on shelves with limited floor space. The unit is designed to be stackable, so that as requirements grow, a second BD 023 can be stacked on top in a space-saving manner, rather than taking up additional floor space in the room. The scope of delivery includes two chrome-plated insert grids for sample placement, which can be adjusted in height to suit the size of the respective vessels.

Economical in continuous operation

With a power consumption of just 0.2 kW, the BD 023 is one of the most energy-efficient units in the entire BD series. Particularly when an incubator of this size is running continuously for days or weeks – for example, for long-term cultures or recurring control batches – the low energy consumption makes a noticeable difference in day-to-day laboratory operations, without any compromise on temperature accuracy. It is connected via a standard Euro plug (Type C) with a rated voltage of 230 V, meaning the BD 023 can be operated at any laboratory workstation without the need for special electrical installations.

Why natural convection rather than forced convection

In addition to the BD series with natural convection, Binder also offers standard incubators with forced air circulation in the BF series. The difference is not a matter of quality, but a deliberate choice based on application requirements: where the priority is on the fastest possible, homogeneous heating, forced convection offers an advantage. Where, on the other hand, a calm interior with minimal air movement is essential – for example, with open Petri dishes or cultures that are sensitive to evaporation and turbulence – the BD 023’s natural convection is the more suitable choice.

Typical applications

The BD 023 is suitable wherever small sample volumes need to be incubated reliably and in a space-saving manner:

  • Routine microbiological testing with small sample volumes
  • Training and teaching laboratories where several compact units are required to operate in parallel
  • Conditioning of heat-sensitive media and reagents
  • Supplementary unit alongside larger incubators for special batches or control preparations
  • Point-of-need use directly at the workstation instead of centralised large-scale equipment

For example, in a training laboratory with several workstations, a separate BD 023 can be set up at each station without the compact units taking up a significant amount of floor space; and thanks to the ability to stack them, capacity can be doubled later on as demand increases, without needing to expand the existing floor space.
