Binder BD 56 Standard Incubator with natural convection, 57 l, 9010-0323

Product information "Binder BD 56 Standard Incubator with natural convection, 57 l, 9010-0323"

The Binder BD 56 Standard Incubator is designed for routine microbiological work without compromising on sample integrity: a 57-litre useful volume, a temperature range from +5 °C above room temperature up to 100 °C, and an interior that operates entirely without a fan make it a reliable piece of equipment for quality control, training and microbiological investigations.

Fanless incubation protects sensitive cultures

The BD 56 operates using natural convection: heat is introduced via the APT.line preheating chamber technology onto the chamber walls, rather than actively circulating the air. This is a significant advantage for open-incubated agar plates or cell cultures, as it prevents both evaporation from being accelerated by air flow and spores from being stirred up inside the chamber. This operating principle really pays off, particularly when incubating on Petri dishes, where a stable microclimate over hours or days is crucial for reproducible results.

Operation via LCD controller with USB data logging

The BD 56 is controlled via a controller with an LCD display, which allows the setpoint temperature to be adjusted easily and precisely. A USB port enables the recording of process data, which is helpful for documentation in accordance with GLP guidelines or for internal quality assurance. The interior consists of corrosion-resistant, deep-drawn stainless steel with no welded seams in the corners, which facilitates cleaning between batch changes and makes it more difficult for biofilms to form.

Safety in accordance with DIN 12880 and thermal decontamination

An integrated Class 3.1 temperature selector monitor in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring a visual alarm, monitors the setpoint temperature independently of the control system – an important feature for unattended overnight incubation runs. As the BD 56 can heat up to 100 °C, the interior can also be used, if required, for simple hot-air decontamination between two batches to reduce the risk of cross-contamination between different samples. The full-surface inner door made of safety glass allows visual inspection of the samples without opening the main door and disrupting the temperature profile inside the chamber.

Stackable to accommodate growing space requirements

With external dimensions of 560 x 565 x 625 mm (W x D x H) and a weight of 39 kg, the BD 56 is compact enough for the laboratory workstation whilst also being designed to be stackable. Should the need for incubation capacity increase, a second BD 56 can be stacked on top in a space-saving manner, rather than taking up additional floor space in the laboratory. The scope of delivery includes two chrome-plated insert racks for sample storage.

Natural rather than forced convection: a conscious choice

With the BF series, Binder also offers standard incubators with forced air circulation. The difference is not a question of quality, but one of application: where particularly rapid, uniform heating is the priority, forced convection is advantageous. Where, on the other hand, a calm, low-draught interior is crucial – for example, with open culture dishes – the natural convection of the BD 56 is the more suitable choice. This decision should be based on the specific type of sample, not on price alone.

Connection and operation

With a power consumption of 0.3 kW and connection via a standard 230 V socket, the BD 56 can be operated at virtually any laboratory workstation without the need for special electrical installations. This also makes it an attractive option for laboratories requiring additional incubation capacity at short notice, without having to make structural alterations to the power supply.

Typical areas of application

The BD 56 covers a wide range of routine microbiological tasks:

  • Bacterial count determination and microbiological quality control in food and beverage laboratories
  • Incubation of agar plates and culture media in microbiology
  • Training and university laboratories with a regular flow of samples
  • Conditioning of heat-sensitive media prior to further processing
  • Quality assurance in the drinks and pharmaceutical industries with a moderate sample volume

For example, in a food testing laboratory, a daily series of bacterial count determinations can be incubated in the BD 56, whilst the USB data logger simultaneously records the temperature profiles for later documentation. In educational settings, the device is equally well suited to smaller practical sessions where several batches are to be incubated simultaneously, but under identical and documented temperature conditions.
