With a usable volume of 118 litres, the Binder BD-S 115 Standard Incubator from the Solid.Line offers greater capacity than the similarly named BD 115 model from the Avantgarde.Line (112 litres) and thus, despite its reduced range of features, meets a solid range of incubation requirements across a temperature range from +5 °C above room temperature up to 70 °C.

More volume than its Avantgarde counterpart

At Binder, the Solid.Line is not simply a downgraded version of the Avantgarde.Line, but features its own unique housing design. This is clearly evident in the BD-S 115: with a capacity of 118 litres, it exceeds the usable volume of the BD 115 (112 litres), but in return does not offer the extended temperature range up to 100 °C, operating instead up to a maximum of 70 °C.

APT.line preheating chamber technology for uniform heat distribution

The APT.line preheating chamber technology is also used in the Solid.Line. Heat is introduced via the chamber walls rather than being circulated by a fan, ensuring that the interior remains at a uniform temperature even with natural convection – which is important for incubating open culture dishes without causing turbulence.

Operation via a controller with timer function

The setpoint temperature is set via a controller with a timer function; a programme memory retains settings once they have been defined. The unit cannot be programmed for complex, multi-stage temperature profiles; however, its range of functions is sufficient for conventional incubation at a constant setpoint temperature.

Adjustable exhaust air flap and safety in accordance with DIN 12880

An adjustable exhaust air flap allows manual adjustment of the air exchange rate to suit the specific application. An integrated Class 3.1 temperature selector monitor in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring a visual alarm, monitors the setpoint temperature independently of the control system. The full-surface inner door made of safety glass (ESG) allows visual inspection of the samples without opening the main door.

Dimensions and scope of supply

With external dimensions of 765 x 616 x 735 mm (W x D x H) and a weight of 47 kg, the BD-S 115 remains a benchtop unit. The scope of delivery includes a chrome-plated insert rack with a base support. The connected load is 0.35 kW, and the unit is powered via a Euro plug (Type C) at a rated voltage of 230 V, meaning that this model can also be operated at a standard laboratory workstation without the need for any special electrical installation.

When the Solid.Line is a better choice than the Avantgarde.Line

If a temperature range above 70 °C is not required and digital data logging is not necessary, the BD-S 115, with its larger interior, actually offers an advantage over the BD 115 whilst featuring simpler, more cost-effective specifications. If, on the other hand, a temperature range up to 100 °C is required – for example, for hot-air decontamination of the interior – a model from the Avantgarde.Line is the more suitable choice.

Fewer moving parts, lower maintenance requirements

The absence of a fan in the BD-S 115 also has an impact on maintenance requirements: without a fan motor, there is one less component that needs to be checked regularly in recirculating air units. Combined with the reduced feature set of the Solid.Line – which lacks an Ethernet connection and USB data logging – this results in a technically straightforward unit that is well suited to routine operation without an IT connection.

In practical terms, this means the following for the purchase decision: anyone requiring digital process documentation or process temperatures above 70 °C should opt for a model from the Avantgarde.Line. On the other hand, anyone looking for a robust, easy-to-use unit for traditional incubation at a constant set temperature – and who would even like to benefit from a larger internal chamber than that of the BD 115 – will find the BD-S 115 to be a cost-effective and functionally suitable solution.

Typical applications

The BD-S 115 is suitable for medium-sized incubation tasks without extended temperature requirements:

• Routine microbiological tests with a moderate sample volume
• Quality assurance in research and training without the need for process temperatures above 70 °C
• Conditioning of heat-sensitive media and reagents
• Growth experiments and culture preparations at a constant setpoint temperature
• A cost-effective alternative to the BD 115 when no extended temperature range is required

For example, in a research laboratory with regular but not extreme temperature requirements, the BD-S 115 can be used as the standard instrument on a permanent basis, whilst an Avantgarde.Line unit is available for occasional high-temperature applications as and when required. Even in a teaching laboratory running several experimental series in parallel, the larger interior of the BD-S 115 offers more scope for simultaneous preparations compared to the BD 115, without having to pay a higher purchase price for unused additional functions.
