Product information "Binder FED 400 drying and heating oven, Avantgarde.Line with forced air circulation and extended timing functions, 400 l, up to 300 °C, 9010-0216"
The Binder FED 400 is one of the larger models in the Avantgarde.Line FED series and offers a 400-litre usable volume with a temperature range from 5 °C above ambient temperature up to 300 °C. Unlike the smaller FED models 56, 115 and 260, which are designed for applications with a lower limit of 10 °C above ambient temperature, the FED 400 operates from as low as 5 °C above ambient temperature, making it suitable for a slightly wider temperature range. Like the entire FED range, it is designed for programmable, documented drying, sterilisation and heat treatment processes for larger batches. For laboratories and production areas that have previously operated several smaller drying cabinets in parallel, the FED 400 consolidates this capacity into a single, programmable unit with significantly reduced operational effort.
Convection and temperature accuracy in a large chamber
An adjustable fan, together with APT.line technology and the preheating chamber technology, ensures the most homogeneous temperature distribution possible within the large interior. At 150 °C, the FED 400 achieves a spatial temperature deviation of 3.8 ± K and a temporal deviation of 0.7 ± K. The heating time to 150 °C is approximately 29 minutes; after the door has been open for 30 seconds, the setpoint temperature is reached again after approximately 6 minutes. With an air change rate of 18 times per hour at 150 °C, even when the large interior is heavily loaded, uniform air circulation is ensured without the formation of pockets of moisture in individual areas of the chamber. Compared with the ED 400 of identical design but without forced air circulation (heating time around 71 minutes), this clearly demonstrates the time saving offered by forced air circulation in this size of unit. For processes requiring several batches per day, this difference can be decisive in determining the actual number of runs achievable.
Programming, interfaces and safety
The controller, with its advanced timing functions, allows drying or sterilisation cycles to be programmed and stored in the programme memory, so that recurring processes do not need to be reset each time. Both an Ethernet interface and an RS 422 computer interface are available for connection to external systems, ensuring that the FED 400 remains compatible even in environments with older process control technology. An integrated Class 2 temperature selector limiter in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring a visual alarm, provides additional safety for unattended process runs, which is particularly relevant given the 400-litre chamber size and the correspondingly high value of goods per batch. The exhaust air flap is adjustable and can be manually adapted to the specific drying or heat treatment process, for example to specifically extract more air when drying solvent-containing samples.
Power rating and installation
As this size requires more power than the smaller FED models, the FED 400 is designed to operate either on 400 V three-phase current or 208 V three-phase current, with a rated power of 3.4 kW and a 16 A circuit breaker. With external dimensions of 1,235 x 765 x 1,025 mm and a weight of 145 kg, the FED 400 is designed as a free-standing unit and should be taken into account when planning its installation, particularly with regard to floor load and access to the three-phase power supply. Compared with the ED 400, which is identical in size, the FED 400 weighs around 20 kg more due to its fan and control technology; this should be taken into account when planning the installation site.
Typical applications
With a capacity of 400 litres, the FED 400 is suitable for larger batches where both rapid heating via forced air circulation and programmable, documented process sequences are required – for example, when large quantities of sample material or components need to be processed regularly according to a reproducible time and temperature profile, and the results must remain comparable across multiple runs.
- Time-controlled drying of large quantities of laboratory glassware, components or packaging material
- Sterilisation processes for larger batches with temperature profiles requiring documentation
- Heat treatment of material samples in quality assurance according to a pre-set programme
- Routine operation in industrial and research laboratories with high throughput and documentation requirements
Two chrome-plated insert racks are included as standard; these are designed to fit the large interior and allow the chamber to be divided for different batches or sample types within the same process run.
