Binder KB 260 refrigerated incubator, 262 l usable volume, temperature range 0 to 70 °C, 9020-0473

Product information "Binder KB 260 refrigerated incubator, 262 l usable volume, temperature range 0 to 70 °C, 9020-0473"

The Binder KB 260 is a freestanding refrigerated incubator with a net capacity of 262 litres and a temperature range of 0 °C to 70 °C. With up to nine shelf racks, significantly more samples can be incubated simultaneously than with the compact KB models – ideal when the laboratory regularly needs to incubate large batches of cultures or test samples in parallel without compromising temperature uniformity.

Precise cooling with the climate-neutral refrigerant R-600a

The KB 260 operates with a modern inverter-controlled refrigeration unit and the climate-neutral refrigerant R-600a. At 37 °C, the spatial temperature deviation is ±0.2 K and the temporal deviation is ±0.1 K; this ensures that the temperature distribution remains uniform even when the unit is fully loaded with up to nine shelf racks. This is made possible by the patented APT.line preheating chamber technology, in which air is fed into the interior from both sides via the outer walls. After the door has been open for 30 seconds, the setpoint temperature of 37 °C is reached again in around 3 minutes; energy consumption is 130 Wh/h at 25 °C and 140 Wh/h at 37 °C.

Typical applications

Refrigerated incubators such as the KB 260 are used wherever samples or cultures need to be maintained at a reproducible temperature below or close to room temperature. Typical applications:

  • Microbiological incubation of larger sample series in bacterial, yeast and fungal cultivation
  • Sterility tests and bacterial count determination in food analysis
  • Environmental monitoring and water analysis in pharmaceutical quality control
  • Sample storage as a programmable ‘weekend fridge’ for unattended periods
  • Research projects requiring multiple temperature-controlled test runs simultaneously

Features and durability in everyday laboratory use

The interior of the KB 260 is made entirely of stainless steel; the inner door is made of metal oxide-coated safety glass and allows visual inspection of the samples without opening the door. A door heater prevents condensation from forming. Two stainless steel shelf racks are included as standard; the interior can be expanded to accommodate up to nine shelf racks if required, each with a load capacity of 40 kg, with a maximum total load of 200 kg. To ensure process reliability, an independent Class 3.3 temperature selector monitor in accordance with DIN 12880, featuring visual and audible alarms, is integrated. An internal data logger records the measured values and can be read out via USB and Ethernet. A self-test function enables a comprehensive status analysis, and thanks to the simple programming of a second temperature setpoint, the KB 260 can automatically switch to a lower holding temperature. A hot-air disinfection routine also supports the cleaning of the interior between test series.

Selection guide: choosing the right size

The BINDER KB series comprises six sizes ranging from 63 to 1,070 litres of net volume. If you are looking for the right size for your sample volume, the table below shows the actual net volume and external dimensions for each size.

KB 06563 l650 x 710 x 905 mm
KB 130127 l900 x 710 x 1,005 mm
KB 260262 l930 × 900 × 1,396 mm
KB 470472 l930 x 900 x 1,951 mm
KB 720727 l1,285 x 900 x 1,951 mm
KB 10601,070 l1,285 x 1,175 x 1,951 mm

With a capacity of 262 litres and up to nine shelf racks, the KB 260 marks the transition from a compact benchtop unit to a floor-standing model. For those requiring even greater capacity, the Binder KB 470 refrigerated incubator offers almost double the capacity whilst maintaining the same footprint, albeit with a greater overall height.

Differences from the neighbouring series

For those who require temperatures below freezing or above 70 °C in addition to the 0 to 70 °C range, the Binder KB PRO 260 refrigerated incubator offers the same dimensions and the same compressor-based design, but with a temperature range of minus 20 °C to plus 100 °C and uses the refrigerant R-290 instead of R-600a. The KBECO series covers the same 0 to 70 °C range using refrigerant-free Peltier technology; here, the maximum cooling capacity is limited to 26 to 28 °C below ambient temperature. For smaller volumes requiring an additional heating function up to 100 °C, the KT series is available; however, its largest model, at 163 litres, is significantly smaller than the usable volume of the KB 260.

Can be retrofitted into a plant growth chamber

The KB 260 can be upgraded into a plant growth chamber with the Binder LED plant light module (8012-2439); an ICH or CO2 module is not available for the standard KB series. In light operation, the smallest size in the range reaches a PAR photon flux density of 1,660 µmol/m²/s at a distance of 25 cm, the highest value in the entire range. The temperature range narrows to 15 °C to 50 °C during this time, and the KB series does not offer humidity control at all. For fitting the 16 LED light strips, a shelf set with U-rails is recommended (8012-2390), ordered separately. Installation of the module, fitting the supply box and routing the light strips and cables, is carried out on site and can be done by the customer.

The modules are accessories and not included with the chamber. You will find them with prices under "Matching modules" on this page; more on our Binder page.

Binder LED plant light module for climate chambers and refrigerated incubators, 16 LED light bars, 8012-2439
Herstellernummer: 8012-2439

A Binder constant-climate cabinet or refrigerated incubator can be converted into a plant growth cabinet using the 8012-2439 LED plant light module, without the need to purchase a separate unit. The module produces lighting conditions that closely resemble natural sunlight and fits into cabinets from the KB, KB PRO, KBF and KBF PRO series with development stage E7. Installation is carried out on site by the customer or a service partner. Design and lighting control The Binder LED plant lighting module consists of 16 LED light strips, which can be positioned individually within the cabinet, and a lighting control box with its own programme controller. Each light strip has three separately controllable colour channels: daylight-like cool white (SunLike, 6,500 K), daylight-like warm white (SunLike, 2,700 K) and dark red phytochrome-controlled light (730 nm), which specifically activates the plant’s phytochrome system. All three channels can be dimmed independently of one another from 0% to 100%. Real-time programming is available for daily routines, either as a cyclical daily programme or individually for each day of the week, supplemented by a twilight function that gently fades the light on and off over a one-hour ramp rather than switching it on or off abruptly. An integrated ventilation function feeds 0 to 500 litres of ambient air per hour into the chamber, thereby maintaining the CO₂ level close to the ambient value required by plants for photosynthesis. The light module is powered by 120 V to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, regardless of the mains voltage of the climate cabinet itself. Light output by cabinet size The light intensity depends on the cabinet size and the distance from the light source. With 100 per cent white light and all 16 light strips evenly distributed on a single plane, size 260 achieves a photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) of 1,660 µmol/m²/s at a distance of 25 cm. Size 470 achieves 1,540 µmol/m²/s at a distance of 25 cm, 990 µmol/m²/s at 50 cm and 730 µmol/m²/s at 75 cm. For the 720 size, the figures are 1,080, 740 and 560 µmol/m²/s at the three distances; for the 1060 size, they are 880, 610 and 480 µmol/m²/s respectively. In the largest available size, 1600 – which is only available for the KB PRO and KBF PRO models – the values are 640, 470 and 380 µmol/m²/s. Distributing the 16 light strips across several levels reduces the light output accordingly: to around 50 per cent of the initial value with two levels, and to around 25 per cent with four levels. The maximum temperature during lighting operation is 60 °C for all sizes. Order mounting grids separately The LED plant light module does not include any grids for mounting the light strips. However, LT Laborhandel supplies insert grid sets with telescopic rails (size 260/470: 8012-2384, size 720: 8012-2385, size 1060: 8012-2386, size 1600: 8012-2387) as well as insert grille sets with U-rails, which Binder expressly recommends for mounting the light strips (size 260/470: 8012-2390, size 720: 8012-2391, size 1060: 8012-2392, size 1600: 8012-2393). The number of additional grilles required depends on the desired lighting configuration. For the basic configuration without an additional level, the two standard grids supplied with the cabinet are sufficient; for one or two light levels, at least one additional set is recommended; for full distribution across several levels, up to six sets are required. An additional grid between the light bars and the sample material also creates a gap of around 10 cm, thereby reducing thermal effects on the samples. Typical applications Plant growth experiments with day-night simulation via real-time programming Germination and seedling experiments with reduced light intensity on a single light bar level Photoperiodism and phytochrome studies via the separately dimmable dark red channel Retrofitting existing Binder E7-generation climate chambers and refrigerated incubators to create plant growth chambers, without the need for additional equipment If a higher CO₂ concentration is also required, for example to accelerate plant growth, the LED plant light module can be combined with a CO₂ injection module. According to the operating instructions, both accessories can operate simultaneously within the same cabinet, unlike the ICH light module, which occupies the CO₂ connection.
