Product information "Binder KB 470 cooling incubator, 472 l usable volume, temperature range 0 to 70 °C, 9020-0474"
The Binder KB 470 is a large-capacity, freestanding cooling incubator with a usable volume of 472 litres and a temperature range of 0 °C to 70 °C. With up to 16 grid shelves and an optional total load capacity of up to 300 kg, it is suitable for laboratories that regularly need to temperature-control larger sample batches or run several parallel test series simultaneously, without compromising on accuracy.
Precise cooling with the natural refrigerant R-600a
The KB 470 operates with a modern inverter refrigeration unit and the natural refrigerant R-600a. At 37 °C, the spatial temperature deviation is ±0.2 K and the temporal deviation is ±0.1 K; even when fully loaded, the patented APT.line preheating chamber technology, with air flow on both sides via the outer walls, ensures a uniform temperature distribution throughout the entire interior. After the door has been open for 30 seconds, the set temperature of 37 °C is reached again after around 3 minutes; energy consumption is 140 Wh/h at 37 °C.
Typical applications
Cooling incubators such as the KB 470 are used wherever samples or cultures need to be maintained at a reproducible temperature below or close to room temperature; in the case of this size of unit, this is particularly relevant when many samples are being processed simultaneously. Typical applications:
- Microbiological incubation of large sample batches in bacterial, yeast and fungal cultures
- Sterility testing and bacterial count determination in food analysis with high sample throughput
- Environmental monitoring and water analysis in pharmaceutical quality control
- Sample storage as a programmable weekend fridge for unattended periods
- Research institutions and testing laboratories conducting several test series in parallel
Equipment and load capacity in day-to-day laboratory work
The interior of the KB 470 is made entirely of stainless steel; the inner door is made of metal oxide-coated safety glass, allowing visual inspection of the samples without opening the door. A door heating system prevents condensation from forming. Two stainless steel grid shelves are included as standard; the interior can be expanded to accommodate up to 16 grid shelves if required, each with a load capacity of 40 kg. The maximum total load is 200 kg as standard; with a reinforced inner chamber and U-rails, loads of up to 300 kg are possible. To ensure process reliability, an independent adjustable temperature monitor Class 3.3 according to DIN 12880, featuring visual and audible alarms, is integrated. An internal data logger records the measured values and can be read out via USB and Ethernet. A self-test function enables a comprehensive status analysis, and thanks to the simple programming of a second temperature setpoint, the KB 470 can be automatically switched to a lower holding temperature. A hot-air disinfection routine also aids in cleaning the interior between test runs.
Selection guide: choosing the right size
The KB series covers six sizes, ranging from 63 to 1,070 litres. The following table compares the actual usable volume, as confirmed by the data sheet, with the external dimensions of each size.
| KB 065 | 63 l | 650 x 710 x 905 mm |
| KB 130 | 127 l | 900 x 710 x 1,005 mm |
| KB 260 | 262 l | 930 x 900 x 1,396 mm |
| KB 470 | 472 l | 930 x 900 x 1,951 mm |
| KB 720 | 727 l | 1,285 x 900 x 1,951 mm |
| KB 1060 | 1,070 l | 1,285 x 1,175 x 1,951 mm |
With a capacity of 472 litres and an optional total load of up to 300 kg, the KB 470 is one of the larger models in the range. Those looking for even more capacity will find the Binder KB 720 cooling incubator with 727 litres, which is the next size up; however, those who can manage with a smaller capacity will save on floor space with the more compact 260-litre model.
How it differs from the neighbouring series
If the 0 to 70 °C range is not sufficient, the Binder KB PRO 470 cooling incubator offers an extended range of -20 °C to +100 °C with R-290 refrigerant and APT-COM Basic Edition as standard, whilst maintaining the same internal volume. The KBECO series operates without refrigerant within the same 0 to 70 °C range, limited to 26 to 28 °C below ambient temperature. Although the KT series also covers heating up to 100 °C, its maximum volume of 163 litres is significantly lower than that of the KB 470.
Frequently asked questions before making a purchase
Can the KB 470 support a total load of more than 200 kg?
With a reinforced inner chamber and U-rails as accessories, the maximum total load can be increased from the standard 200 kg to up to 300 kg.
How many grid shelves can be accommodated in the KB 470?
Two grid shelves are included as standard; if required, the interior can be expanded to accommodate up to 16 grid shelves, each with a load capacity of 40 kg.
How quickly does the KB 470 return to the set temperature after the door has been opened?
After the door has been open for 30 seconds, the set temperature of 37 °C is reached again after around 3 minutes.

Retrofit LED plant light module for the KB 470
With the Binder LED plant light module (8012-2439), the KB 470 can also be used as a plant growth cabinet. At full white light output, the PAR photon flux density is 1,540 µmol/m²/s at a distance of 25 cm, 990 µmol/m²/s at 50 cm and 730 µmol/m²/s at 75 cm; in pure dark red mode, it is 62 W/m² at 25 cm. The temperature range is restricted to 10 °C to 50 °C in lighting mode; humidity control is not provided in the standard KB series. An ICH or CO₂ module is not available for this series. Grid shelves with U-rails (8012-2390) are recommended for the light strips; the module is installed on site by the customer.
The modules are accessories and do not form part of the scope of delivery for the cabinet. You can find them, along with their prices, under ‘Matching modules’ on this page; further details can be found on our Binder page.
