Binder UF V 350 ultra-low temperature freezer, −90 °C to −40 °C, 402 l, 9020-0453

Samples requiring long-term storage at minus 80 degrees Celsius need an ultra-low temperature freezer that reliably maintains this temperature, even when the door is opened several times a day. The Binder UF V 350 covers the range from −90 °C to −40 °C and provides 402 litres of usable capacity in the most compact housing in the UF V series. The entire chamber is made of stainless steel and is cooled by a cascade compression cooling machine using the climate-neutral refrigerants R-290 and R-170.

Climate-neutral cooling technology and insulation

Cooling is provided by a two-stage cascade compression cooling machine using R-290 (propane) and R-170 (ethane) refrigerants. Both are considered climate-neutral and replace the partially fluorinated refrigerants previously used by Binder. Thermal insulation is provided by vacuum insulation panels (Long-life VIPs), which are significantly thinner than conventional foam insulation while providing the same insulating performance, leaving more usable capacity within the housing. At a setpoint of −80 °C and an ambient temperature of 20 °C, the UF V 350 consumes 7.5 kWh/d according to the data sheet, with an average heat output of 310 W. Starting from a room temperature of 22 °C, the freezer reaches −80 °C after 210 min, a value that can be factored into planning sample transfers from another unit.

Construction and access to the chamber

An outer door leads to two removable stainless-steel inner doors, which divide the chamber into compartments and allow only part of the cold air to escape when opened. An innovative door seal concept reduces ice formation on the seal, while an ergonomic door-closing lever facilitates closing even when wearing gloves. Three flexibly positionable stainless-steel shelves are fitted as standard. The chamber can be upgraded to accommodate up to eleven shelves if required. With the standard configuration of three racks per shelf level, the freezer accommodates up to 264 cryoboxes in the 50 mm format. Each compartment can carry up to 40 kg, with a total permissible load of 160 kg.

Monitoring and alarm functions

An internal data logger continuously records temperature values and can be read via USB in an open file format without requiring manufacturer-specific software. The freezer can be integrated into a network via the Ethernet interface, while a volt-free alarm contact forwards faults to an existing building alarm system. Three 28 mm diameter access ports at the rear accommodate additional sensors or cables for external monitoring systems. A lockable door handle is available as an accessory. Water cooling is not available for the UF V 350, as this option is reserved for the larger models in the series.

Installation and electrical connection

The UF V 350 has a net weight of 226 kg and requires at least 100 mm clearance behind the housing and at least 250 mm clearance at the sides to allow air to circulate around the condenser. It connects to a 230 V AC, 50 Hz supply via a CEE 7/7 (Schuko) plug. The unit fuse is rated at 10 A and the rated power is 1.6 kW. With a width of 706 mm and a depth of 938 mm, the freezer fits through most laboratory doors without prior disassembly.

UF V series sizes

The UF V 350 is the smallest of three sizes in the air-cooled UF V series. If more capacity is required later, the UF V 500 with 501 litres and the UF V 700 with 736 litres are the next larger models. Both have the same temperature range and climate-neutral refrigerants, but are also optionally available with water cooling. This allows a laboratory to add a second freezer from the same series as sample volumes increase, without changing operating procedures.

Typical applications

With 402 litres of capacity, the UF V 350 is suitable for laboratories purchasing their first dedicated minus 80 degree freezer or wishing to store a smaller, clearly managed sample collection separately from a larger main freezer. Typical applications:
