Product information "Brand Transferpettor Positive Displacement Pipette, Digital, 1-5 ml, with PP Cap, DE-M, 702810"
Concentrated sugar solutions and syrups are among the densest media pipetted in the laboratory, and an ordinary air displacement pipette quickly reaches its limit here. The Brand Transferpettor positive displacement pipette, Digital 1-5 ml, is built for exactly such cases: the piston in the PP cap displaces the liquid directly, with no air cushion in between. In recipe testing, a concentrated sugar solution in the millilitre range can thus be dispensed reliably.
Positive displacement principle in the macro version
The macro version of the Transferpettor Digital guides the liquid through a PP cap, and the piston moves directly in this component. According to Brand, this design covers media with a density up to 13.6 g/cm³, at a vapour pressure of up to 500 mbar, as found with alcohols, ethers and other hydrocarbons. The working temperature range is 15 to 40 degrees Celsius. How viscous the sample may be depends on the set nominal volume; according to the manufacturer, the permissible kinematic viscosity rises with larger volume from 6,000 up to 140,000 mm²/s.
The 1-5 ml version is identified by the colour code red and works with an increment of 10 µl, with an accuracy of 0.5 % and a coefficient of variation of 0.2 %.
Typical applications
For the 1-5 ml version, the following applications are typical, among others:
- Dispensing concentrated sugar solutions in recipe testing
- Pipetting solvents and reagents with high vapour pressure, where an air displacement pipette is prone to evaporation errors
- Working with foaming or highly viscous media such as sugar solutions and syrups, where an air displacement pipette traps air bubbles
- Repeated pipetting steps with the same tip, as positive displacement leaves hardly any residue in the tip
Selection guide within the Digital series
With 1-5 ml, this version covers a significantly larger volume range than the microlitre models of the Digital series and belongs to the macro group with PP cap and DE-M marking. Within the macro models, it lies between the 200-1000 µl and the 2-10 ml variants. For media with a density close to the manufacturer's upper limit of 13.6 g/cm³, it is, together with the 2-10 ml version, the suitable choice within the series.
Distinction from the Transferpette S
The Transferpette S from Brand works on the air displacement principle, an air cushion between piston and liquid transmits the movement. For aqueous standard solutions this is the usual choice. The Transferpettor Digital dispenses with this air cushion and is therefore suited to media where an air cushion would cause volume errors, for example viscous or foaming liquids. The two series complement each other but do not replace one another.
Maintenance and accessories
For the macro version with PP cap, we stock suitable accessories such as stand, PP caps, seals, combi pack caps+seal and a repair set, which Brand expressly recommends as maintenance accessories for replacing the piston rod and seal. In addition, the stainless steel piston rod Digital macro, union nut and piston rod lock macro belong to the accessory range. For housing material, dimensions, weight and autoclavability, no verified manufacturer information is available for this model, which is why these values are missing from the following table.
For the 1-5 ml version with colour code red, the same accessory range applies as for the other macro models of the Digital series.
Frequently asked questions
What media does the 1-5 ml version tolerate?
According to the manufacturer, media with a density up to 13.6 g/cm³ and a vapour pressure up to 500 mbar, at a working temperature of 15 to 40 degrees Celsius.
How accurate is the pipette?
The accuracy is 0.5 %, the coefficient of variation is 0.2 %, in each case according to the manufacturer test value for the 1-5 ml version with colour code red.
Does the pipette tip have to be changed after each step?
No, the positive displacement principle cleans the tip practically to the last drop through the close piston contact, so changing the tip after every step is generally not necessary.
Is the 1-5 ml version DE-M marked?
Yes, according to the manufacturer, this macro version bears the DE-M marking.
What is the 1-5 ml version typically suitable for?
For dispensing concentrated sugar solutions in recipe testing, as well as generally for sugar solutions and syrups and other viscous or foaming media in the corresponding volume range.
