Product information "Bürkle GeoSampler soil sampler, V2A stainless steel, 560 mm, 5350-5003"
Anyone wishing to take a full-depth sample from a lawn or light soil needs a tool that can be driven into the ground and pulled out again by hand, without the need for a drill or heavy equipment. The GeoSampler, made from V2A stainless steel, is designed specifically for these light soils and is available in two lengths – 560 and 810 mm – each with a 300 mm chamber length for the actual sampling.
Full-depth sample by hand
The GeoSampler is pressed into the ground by hand, taking a continuous cross-sectional sample over the entire chamber length of 300 mm. This is suitable when you are interested not just in a single depth but in a profile across several soil layers, for example to see how soil type or moisture content changes from the surface down into deeper layers. A hand drill or a motorised drilling aid is not required for this type of sampling.
Two lengths, with and without a foot rest
The shorter version, with a total length of 560 mm, has a tube diameter of 11 mm and does not feature a foot rest. The longer version, at 810 mm, has a slightly larger tube diameter of 14 mm and a foot rest, which makes it easier to drive the tube into firmer soil.
For light soils, grassland and lawns
Bürkle describes the GeoSampler as a tool for light soils, grassland and lawns. For heavier, stony soils, where more force and a more robust design are required, the Pürckhauer – made from the same material class – is the more suitable choice.
Cleaning between two sampling points
The GeoSampler’s V2A stainless steel can be quickly wiped down or rinsed between two sampling points to ensure that soil residues from one area do not contaminate the next sample. This is particularly important when, as part of a survey, several areas with different soil conditions are sampled in quick succession.
Handling in the field
The GeoSampler is pressed directly into the ground by hand without the need for tools and is pulled out again after sampling. With the shorter version without a foot rest, body weight and arm strength are usually sufficient for this; with the longer version with a foot rest, you can apply additional pressure with your foot, which is particularly helpful on slightly firmer ground. Both versions are made from V2A stainless steel and are therefore designed for repeated outdoor use.
Soil profile rather than a single depth
Unlike a soil cylinder, which only samples a specific depth, the GeoSampler, with its 300 mm chamber length, provides a continuous sample across the top 30 centimetres of the soil. Anyone wishing to know whether soil type, moisture content or compaction vary within this zone can determine this directly from the soil column collected, without having to take several individual samples from different depths.
Typical applications
- Soil sampling on grassland and lawns
- Light, slightly compacted soils
- Full-depth samples for agricultural or horticultural soil analyses

Tube and outer diameters
The tube diameter is 11 millimetres for the shorter version and 14 millimetres for the longer version, whilst the outer diameter is 17 and 20 millimetres respectively. The smaller the diameter, the less force is required to push it into the soil; however, the amount of soil extracted per puncture is reduced. This is not a disadvantage for a quick survey sample across several areas; however, for a larger analytical sample from a single puncture, the larger diameter of the 810 mm version may be advantageous.

Service and procurement
The GeoSampler is generally sufficient for light soils; for heavier or stony soils, switching to the Pürckhauer is recommended. Which of the two lengths is most suitable depends on how deep the soil profile of interest extends and how easily the soil can be worked on site. LT Laborhandel stocks both lengths of the GeoSampler individually and can also advise on the choice between the GeoSampler and the Pürckhauer if required. If you have any queries regarding the appropriate model, please contact LT Laborhandel for assistance.
