Product information "Bürkle Mole Drill Head, Coarse Sand, replacement head for soil sampler, iron/steel, 5350-1025"
The coarser and drier the sand, the less grip a standard drill bit has in the material. Coarse-grained, bone-dry soil slips out even from wide standard flanks. The ‘Mole’ coarse-sand drill bit is designed precisely for such situations, with extra-wide flanks that allow the bit to close further as it is driven in, compared to the standard sand version. Anyone who regularly works in such locations will save themselves the trouble of having to re-drill the same spot repeatedly, simply because the first sample was lost on its way up.
Extra-wide flanks for coarse, dry material
The coarse sand head is based on the principle of the sand head, but takes the flank width a step further. The drill bit closes more tightly as it is driven in, so that even larger grains and dry, barely cohesive material are held between the flanks. This makes the head the right choice for coarse sandy soils and for very dry soils, where even finer sand barely holds together on its own.
Dry soils in summer
Following prolonged dry spells, even soil that was originally moist loses its natural cohesion – an effect that is particularly pronounced in sandy and coarse-grained sites. For sampling carried out precisely during such phases – for example, during summer site investigations – the more compact design of the coarse sand head is an advantage, as it is less dependent on the soil’s moisture content than the simpler sand version.
Use with the ‘Mole’ handle
The coarse sand core is also a replacement part only and functions only in conjunction with the ‘Mole’ handle and rod. The handle itself is 750 millimetres long; for deeper drilling, it can be extended with a 100-centimetre extension (5350-1010).
Typical applications
The coarse sand head is the right choice when the soil is coarse-grained, dry or both, for example for:
- Sampling in coarse-grained, dry sandy soils
- Site investigation on sandy sites during dry weather
- Sampling at the edges of gravel pits with a high sand content
- Environmental analysis at sites with poorly cohesive, permeable subsoil
The transition to gravel and hard soils
If gravel rather than just coarse sand is expected in the soil, the Gravel Drill bit, with its curved, angled blades, provides better grip because it clamps individual stones between its flanks rather than simply displacing them. If the soil is also hard and encrusted, for example on riverbanks or heavily compacted areas, the Riverside drill bit is the more robust choice. For finer-grained, less dry sand, on the other hand, the simpler ‘Sand’ drill head is sufficient.
Material and operating conditions
Like the handle, the coarse sand drill head is made of iron/steel and requires no electronics or battery. This allows it to be used in hot and dusty conditions without having to worry about temperature limits or charge levels. To store it between uses, simply keep it in a dry place at room temperature; any sand stuck to it should be removed before stowing.

Service and procurement
For projects involving multiple soil types, ranging from fine sand to gravel, LT Laborhandel can, on request, supply the coarse sand drill head together with suitable drill heads for the remaining sections, so that there is no need to reorder on site if the soil turns out to be coarser than expected. If you have any questions about choosing the right drill head – sand, coarse sand or gravel – please contact LT Laborhandel directly for assistance.
