Some validation guidelines require three samples per zone tested for homogeneity testing, rather than two. The Novartos Multi, with its 3-way sample extractor, draws three sub-samples from four to nine zones along the penetration depth in a single puncture, for tests where two duplicates are insufficient and a third sample is required as a reserve or for a second method.

Three samples per zone, one puncture

Each collection chamber accommodates three sample inserts (sold separately), which fill simultaneously at the same point when the lance is inserted. Distributed across the entire penetration depth, it delivers between 12 and 27 individual samples from a single penetration, depending on the length, without the need to penetrate each zone separately.

Use in validation and release

Three samples per zone provide more robust results than two, for example when a mixing batch is released for the first time or a mixing process is being validated. One of the three sub-samples can serve as a retained sample, whilst the other two can be used for the ongoing and a repeat test, without the need for a new puncture in the same zone for the repeat test. For a quality assurance team qualifying a new mixing plant for the first time, this provides a triple data set for each zone straight away, rather than having to carry out several sampling punctures at different times.

Three lengths, increasing number of zones

At a penetration depth of 600 millimetres, the lance has four zones with twelve chambers, with a total length of 800 millimetres. At 1,000 millimetres, there are seven zones with 21 chambers, with a total length of 1,200 millimetres. At 1,400 millimetres, there are nine zones with 27 chambers, giving a total length of 1,600 millimetres. The chamber spacing is 125 millimetres in the shortest and middle versions, and 135 millimetres in the longest.

Material for the pharmaceutical sector

Manufactured from V4A stainless steel (1.4404) with components made from 1.4571, tube diameter 25 millimetres, chamber length 30 millimetres, with the first collection chamber starting 55 millimetres from the tip of the lance.

Why the chamber position matters

Because the first collection chamber begins only 55 millimetres behind the lance tip, the top 55 millimetres of the container are left without a sample of their own. The chamber spacing of 125 or 135 millimetres determines how closely or widely the zones are distributed across the selected penetration depth. Anyone wishing to cover the entire fill height of a container as completely as possible should select the length that is closest to the actual height.

Replacement tip and sample inserts

A replacement tip made of V4A is available as a separate spare part for the Novartos Multi series. The corresponding sample inserts are available in five volumes ranging from 0 to 2 millilitres; for the 3-channel version, three inserts are required per zone instead of two.

Choice within the Novartos range

If two samples per zone are sufficient, the Novartos Multi with a 2-position sample holder is the more compact alternative with fewer chambers per zone. If, instead of multiple zones, only a single target site with three samples is being tested, the Novartos Uno with a 3-position sample holder is a better fit. For a target site with two samples, the Novartos Uno with a 2-position sample holder is available.

Typical industries

The triple sample draw is primarily used where mixing processes need to be formally validated or qualified for the first time, for example in the pharmaceutical manufacture of powder mixtures or in the chemical production of granules with strict homogeneity specifications. In such cases, the quality system often requires a third, independent sample per test point, which the Novartos Multi 3-sample version provides without the need for an additional puncture.
