Product information "Eppendorf Research plus single-channel pipette, fixed, 1,000 µL, blue, 3124000121"
Anyone who repeatedly pipettes the same volume does not need a variable setting, but rather a reliable preset that cannot be accidentally adjusted. The Eppendorf Research plus 1,000 µL in blue is designed precisely for this purpose: a fixed volume of 1,000 µL, a spring-loaded tip cone for little effort when attaching the tip, and a low weight within the Eppendorf pipette range. The pipette is suitable for routine procedures in which the same volume is dispensed over many repetitions. A classic example is medium change in cell culture, where the same volume of culture medium is removed from and added back to each culture vessel, day after day, following the same procedure.
Typical applications
The Eppendorf Research plus 1,000 µL is suitable for, amongst other things:
- Media changes in cell culture, where the same volume of culture medium is always removed or added to each culture vessel
- Buffer preparations and reagent dispensing in the medium-volume range
- Sample aliquoting and sample preparation
- Filling reaction vessels and cuvettes
Features and handling
For volumes up to 1 mL, Eppendorf’s Research-plus range features a spring-loaded tip cone, which makes attaching and ejecting the pipette tip noticeably easier. For cleaning and maintenance, the lower section with the Fortron PerfectPiston can be quickly dismantled without the need for tools.
If the pipetting result deviates from the expected accuracy, for example when using a liquid other than water, the pipette can be readjusted via a user adjustment without losing the original factory setting.
Selection guide within the Research-plus range
Several volumes are available within the pre-set Research-plus models. The following overview shows further fixed-volume versions from the same range, each with its own colour code and manufacturer’s number. The 20 µL and 200 µL volumes are each available in two colours (20 µL: yellow 3124000040, light grey 3124000032; 200 µL: yellow 3124000083, blue 3124000091):
| Volume | Colour code | MPN |
| 200 µL | blue | 3124000091 |
| 50 µL | yellow | 3124000067 |
| 20 µL | yellow | 3124000040 |
| 500 µL | blue | 3124000113 |
The appropriate volume in each individual case depends on the actual sample quantities and reagent volumes involved in the respective step. Selecting a volume that is too large reduces relative accuracy at the lower end of the scale, whilst selecting a volume that is too small necessitates several pipetting steps instead of a single one.
For medium changes, the blue tip range (50 to 1,000 µL) is suitable; this range also includes the 200 µL, 250 µL and 500 µL fixed-volume versions, as well as the variable 100–1,000 µL version from the same range.
A comparison of Research plus, Reference 2 and Xplorer
When choosing between Research plus, Reference 2 and Xplorer, the frequency of volume changes is the key deciding factor. Research plus sets the volume mechanically via a setting wheel, without a display, which makes the pipette lightweight and robust. Reference 2 displays the volume digitally and is operated via a single button, which is an advantage where there are multiple users and varying protocols. Xplorer and Xplorer plus handle pipetting electronically, including programmable sequences. For workstations with a clearly defined volume range and no need for programming functions, Research plus is the more streamlined solution.
Differentiation within the Research plus range
If the volume range of this pipette does not fully meet your requirements, it is worth looking at neighbouring Research plus models, for example the Eppendorf Research plus G pipette, single-channel, fixed, 200 µL, blue, 3124000091 and Eppendorf Research plus G pipette, single-channel, fixed, 50 µL, yellow, 3124000067. This allows you to put together a suitable combination of several volume ranges without having to switch to a different product line.
Use, storage and maintenance
Sterilisation in an autoclave is intended to be carried out at 121 °C, 1 bar gauge pressure and a holding time of 20 minutes whilst the pipette is fully assembled, without dismantling the lower section; the filter sleeve and protective filter are autoclaved separately. There is no need to re-lubricate the pistons afterwards, although a gravimetric check of accuracy is nevertheless advisable. For storage without transport packaging, the temperature range is –5 to 45 °C at 10 to 95 % relative humidity; the unit is designed for operation at 5 to 40 °C within the same range. The relevant Eppendorf contractual partner is responsible for warranty matters, excluding wear parts and damage caused by misuse or an unauthorised opening of the upper part.
Fixed volume or variable setting
Where a pipetting step is always carried out with the same volume, for example with standardised test kits or recurring dilution steps, a fixed-volume pipette saves time compared with resetting the volume of a variable pipette. At the same time, the risk of accidental adjustment during batch work is reduced. If the required volume varies from project to project, a variable Research-plus pipette from the same range is the more flexible alternative. During daily media changes in cell culture, the volume per culture vessel is specified by the protocol; a fixed preset speeds up batch processing and prevents the dial from being accidentally adjusted.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Eppendorf Research plus 1,000 µL autoclavable?
Yes. The upper and lower sections can be autoclaved together at 121 °C and 1 bar gauge pressure for 20 minutes without the lower section needing to be dismantled. The filter sleeve and protective filter are autoclaved separately.
Is re-lubrication needed after autoclaving?
It is not necessary to re-lubricate the pistons after autoclaving. However, a gravimetric accuracy check is still recommended afterwards.
Can the volume of the 1,000 µL version be adjusted?
No, this version has a fixed preset volume of 1,000 µL and no setting wheel for selecting the volume. If you require different volumes within the same range, you will find suitable variable models in the Research plus range.
Which pipette tips are compatible with the Eppendorf Research plus 1,000 µL?
According to the operating instructions: epT.I.P.S. blue 71 mm (50–1,000 µL).
Is the pipette an in vitro diagnostic device?
No. Eppendorf lists the Research plus as a pipette for general laboratory use; it does not carry CE-IVD marking. Eppendorf discontinued the earlier IVD version under Directive 98/79/EC in early 2022, when Regulation (EU) 2017/746 replaced the Directive. According to the manufacturer, the pipette is technically unchanged and may be used for general laboratory applications, including IVD applications.
To whom should warranty claims be addressed?
To the relevant Eppendorf contractual partner. Excluded is damage resulting from misuse, unauthorised opening of the upper part, and wear and tear of typical wear parts.
Can the pipette be readjusted if it deviates from the factory setting?
According to the manufacturer, secondary adjustment is provided for the Research-plus range. Details are set out in a separate Eppendorf adjustment document.
