IKA A 11.5 Replacement Grinding Cup, 80 ml, stainless steel/Tefcel, 0002983100

Product information "IKA A 11.5 Replacement Grinding Cup, 80 ml, stainless steel/Tefcel, 0002983100"

Kinetic containment and radial impact comminution

In instrumental analysis, the high-speed digestion of hard and brittle matrices requires a sealed chamber capable of withstanding high mechanical loads. With its geometric working volume of 80 ml, the IKA A 11.5 replacement grinding cup defines the primary fluid-dynamic working chamber of the A 11 basic analytical mill. The inner cylinder wall is made of solid, highly wear-resistant stainless steel. At rotational speeds of up to 28,000 revolutions per minute, the grinding tool hurls the solid particles radially outwards with extreme centrifugal force. The stainless steel wall acts physically as a static anvil, reflecting the kinetic energy of the incoming particles back into the matrix in the form of mechanical shock waves, thereby forcing homogeneous particle size reduction through secondary wall collisions.

Thermodynamic resilience and cryogenics

The conversion of kinetic friction energy into heat that is detrimental to the process (exothermic reaction) is the main process-engineering challenge when grinding temperature-sensitive, elastic or biologically active samples. To prevent molecular degradation or melting of the matrix, the A 11 basic is designed for cryogenic grinding. The molecular lattice structure of the A 11.5 stainless steel interior allows liquid nitrogen (LN₂ at -196 °C) or dry ice (solid CO₂ at -78.5 °C) to be applied directly to the sample. Unlike thermoplastic polycarbonate vessels, this metallic matrix fully withstands extreme thermal shock (temperature gradients) without suffering mechanical cold fracture (embrittlement and splintering).

Macromolecular insulation matrix and occupational safety

The use of extreme cryogenic cooling media or, alternatively, the generation of extreme frictional heat over long grinding intervals requires special protection for the user. The A 11.5 grinding cup features a dual-architecture design based on materials science: the stainless steel interior is completely enclosed by a solid outer jacket made of Tefcel (a modified ETFE fluoropolymer). This high-performance polymer has an extremely low thermal conductivity coefficient. It acts as a physical insulator, blocking the flow of heat to the outside and thus enabling the vessel, which is cryogenically cooled to -196 °C, to be handled without immediate risk of frostbite. Furthermore, as a tight containment system, the sealed cup system prevents the spread of toxic dusts and aerosols into the laboratory environment.

Individual requirements & accessories

The A 11.5 cup forms the physical container for the grinding process and requires the corresponding grinding tool to generate kinetic energy. The metal inner wall allows unrestricted use of the A 11.1 stainless steel beater (for standard impact grinding) as well as the A 11.2 cutting blade (for tough and fibrous samples). To ensure the chamber is tightly sealed, the cup must always be closed with the original A 11 basic lid during operation. Promotional items from the IKA Specials Q4/2026, valid until 31 December 2026. The crossed-out price is IKA’s recommended retail price. Our promotional price is net.Brittle sample material can be crushed using a beater, whilst soft and fibrous materials are best cut rather than beaten. The IKA A 11 basic covers both methods using the same drive mechanism. The scope of delivery includes the A 11.1 stainless steel beater for impact grinding; a cutting blade for fibrous materials is available separately as an accessory. With a maximum speed of 28,000 revolutions per minute and a circumferential speed of up to 53 metres per second, the batch mill generates sufficient energy to grind material up to a Mohs hardness of 6, with a maximum working volume of 80 ml per grinding cycle. Impact grinding with the stainless steel beater For hard, brittle or pre-embrittled feed materials, the A 11.1 stainless steel beater included in the scope of delivery is the standard equipment, thereby already covering the vast majority of classic analytical mill applications. At up to 28,000 rpm and a circumferential speed of 53 m/s, it pulverises the material within short grinding times. The maximum feed particle size is 10 mm; larger pieces should be coarsely pre-crushed before grinding, as the mill is designed for fine grinding and does not replace a coarse crusher. The optionally available A 11.6 double beater for the A 11.4 grinding cup further increases throughput capacity where required. Cutting grinding for soft, fibrous materials For soft or fibrous samples, where a beater tends to crush rather than grind, IKA offers the A 11.2 cutting blade as a separate accessory. It is not included in the standard scope of delivery. Moist or sticky feed materials can be ground more effectively by adding water to the grinding chamber; this prevents the material from sticking to the beater or the chamber wall during the grinding process. Cooled grinding with dry ice or liquid nitrogen Some materials only become brittle enough to be efficiently impact-ground at low temperatures, such as fatty or elastic samples, which tend to deform rather than be ground at room temperature. The grinding chamber of the A 11 basic can be cooled directly using either dry ice or liquid nitrogen; this causes the material to become brittle within the grinding chamber itself, without the need for a separate pre-cooling step. In combination with the short permitted duty cycle of 1 minute of operation followed by a 10-minute pause, this allows even thermally sensitive material to be ground in a controlled manner, without it overheating due to the grinding energy and thereby losing its original structure, a factor that can be particularly relevant for subsequent chemical or physical analyses of the ground material. Typical applications With impact grinding, cutting grinding and cooling capability all in one unit, the A 11 basic covers a wide range of sample preparation tasks, from routine comminution to demanding, temperature-sensitive sample material: Impact grinding of hard, brittle or embrittled samples using stainless steel beaters, up to Mohs hardness 6 Cutting grinding of soft, fibrous materials using a cutting blade (available separately) Crushing of moist or sticky feed materials through controlled water addition Embrittlement and grinding of temperature-sensitive samples using dry ice or liquid nitrogen Sample preparation for subsequent analysis in the laboratory and for quality assurance Selection guide: which grinding tool is suitable Within the A-11 range of accessories, it is primarily the material properties of the sample that determine the suitable tool, not a different machine. The following overview shows which tool is intended for which grinding principle and what is already included in the scope of delivery for the mill. Differences from the neighbouring series For those who wish to work continuously with cooling rather than manually adding dry ice or liquid nitrogen, the IKA A 10 basic (coolable) is a similar mill from the same range. The A 10 basic holds up to 50 ml, reaches 25,000 rpm and is cooled via a water connection or with dry ice. Before deciding between the two models, it is worth consulting the relevant data sheet. An overview of all mills in the range can be found in the ‘Mills’ category. Application, installation and maintenance Measuring 85 x 240 x 85 mm and weighing 1.5 kg, the A 11 basic can be placed on the laboratory bench like a handheld device and moved as required. The permitted duty cycle of 1 minute of operation followed by a 10-minute break should be observed to prevent the motor from overheating, particularly when carrying out several grinding operations in succession with different samples. The grinding chamber and grinding cup can be removed and cleaned after grinding; degree of protection IP 43 provides additional protection against dust that may be released when the chamber is opened; however, this does not constitute complete dust protection for continuous use in heavily dusty environments. At the end of its service life, as an electrical appliance, the device must be disposed of via the separate collection scheme for waste electrical and electronic equipment, not in household waste. Individual requirements and procurement service In addition to the A 11.2 cutting blade, we offer further grinding tools for the A 11 basic, such as the A 11.3 carbide beater and the A 11.6 double beater, as well as replacement grinding cups, feed hoppers and factory calibration certificates. Do you require a specific grinding tool for your sample type, an additional grinding cup as a spare part, or assistance in choosing between impact and cutting grinding? Through our procurement service, we support you with procurement and configuration.
