From a reaction volume of two litres, the questions of scale-up behaviour, mixing and heat removal move increasingly into the foreground for many syntheses. The IKA EasySyn 2000 Starter (0010016816) provides a complete reactor system that can be set up immediately, combining stand, reactor vessel and stirrer into a ready-to-use unit for 2,000 millilitres of reaction volume, without the additional functions and higher price of the Advanced version. Compared with the smaller 500 and 1,000 millilitre models of the series, the focus with the 2 litre vessel shifts more clearly towards scale-up-relevant questions such as heat removal and mixing of larger volumes.

Larger reactor vessel with DN 150 flange

The double-walled reactor vessel SY 2000 D made of borosilicate glass 3.3 has, like the smaller EasySyn models, a bottom outlet with a spring-loaded valve spindle against glass breakage. Because of the larger volume, the flange connection here is sized at DN 150 (SY clamp 150, SY clamping ring 150, FEP-coated SY O-ring 150), one size up from the 500 and 1,000 millilitre variants. The reactor lid SY 150.1 offers four openings: an NS 29/32 centre joint for the stirrer as well as two further NS 29/32 and one NS 14/23 connection for additional accessories such as reflux condensers or temperature sensors. The borosilicate glass 3.3 is resistant to most solvents and reagents commonly used in the laboratory, and the finished reaction product can be drained directly into a collecting vessel via the bottom outlet.

EUROSTAR 60 digital for larger volumes

The PTFE-coated pitched-blade stirrer R 4012 SY, a larger stirrer size specially adapted for the 2 litre vessel compared with the smaller EasySyn models, is driven by the EUROSTAR 60 digital stirrer. The brushless DC motor covers a speed range of 0/30 to 2,000 revolutions per minute and delivers up to 60 Ncm of torque at the stirring shaft. An integrated torque trend display makes changes in viscosity during the reaction visible. The stirring tool can be changed without additional tools via the quick-release chuck R 60. The brushless DC motor (176 watts input, 126 watts output) is designed to be low-maintenance, since, unlike motors with brushes, there are no carbon brushes that wear out and have to be replaced regularly.

Vacuum, temperature range and usable volume

A special stirrer shaft guide makes the system suitable for operation under vacuum down to 3 mbar. The materials used are designed for a temperature range of minus 50 to plus 200 °C, and the permissible ambient temperature for operation itself is between 5 and 40 °C. The 2,000 millilitre vessel can be used from a filling volume of 120 millilitres, and with the temperature sensor immersed the minimum usable volume rises to 400 millilitres, considerably more than with the smaller vessel sizes of the series. For pure temperature control, an external circulating thermostat is additionally required, which is connected to the reactor vessel via the connections of the double jacket. The stirrer shaft guide (SY guide) takes care of the actual sealing of the stirring shaft against the reactor lid.

Ergonomic stand system for larger vessels

The stand system also remains ergonomic with the 2 litre model: the working height adapts to the operator, and the reactor vessel can be quickly released and exchanged via the DN 150 clamp. As clamp, clamping ring, O-ring and reactor lid are matched to the same DN 150 flange size on the two larger EasySyn models (2,000 and 5,000 millilitres), spare parts and accessories can be exchanged easily within these two sizes, an advantage for laboratories that keep both sizes in stock.

What the Starter variant deliberately leaves out

The EasySyn 2000 Starter does without the draining set LT 5.40 and an RS232/USB interface on the stirrer, both features of the Advanced version. For laboratories that primarily want to stir and work under vacuum without logging the process digitally, this is a sensible, cost-efficient specification. An external circulating thermostat including temperature control hoses is in any case additionally required to actually heat or cool the double jacket.

With 2,000 millilitres of reaction volume, the EasySyn 2000 Starter covers the transition between small laboratory scale and first, more meaningful scale-up trials:
