Small batch sizes with expensive or hard to source starting materials call for a reactor system that does not first have to be assembled from separate parts. The IKA EasySyn 500 Starter (0010016813) is a complete synthesis reactor system for 500 millilitres of reaction volume: stand, double walled reactor vessel and stirrer are matched to each other and ready to use right after setup. As the smallest model in the EasySyn Starter line, this synthesis reactor is a good fit wherever a batch first needs to run reproducibly on a small scale before larger volumes follow.

SY 500 D reactor vessel: borosilicate glass with bottom discharge valve

The double walled reactor vessel SY 500 D is made of chemically resistant borosilicate glass 3.3 and has a bottom discharge valve with a spring loaded valve spindle that protects against glass breakage when opening and closing. The reactor lid SY 100.1 provides four openings: one NS 29/32 centre joint for the stirrer plus two further NS 29/32 and one NS 14/23 connection, for example for a dropping funnel, reflux condenser or an external temperature probe. Clamp, clamp ring and the FEP coated O-ring are matched to the DN 100 flange connection of the 500 millilitre vessel, the same flange size also used by the larger 1,000 millilitre model in the line.

EUROSTAR 60 digital with propeller stirrer R 4011 SY

The drive is the overhead stirrer EUROSTAR 60 digital with a brushless DC motor. It covers a speed range of 0/30 to 2,000 rpm and delivers up to 60 Ncm torque at the stirrer shaft, enough for thin to medium viscosity reaction media at the 500 millilitre scale. A built in torque trend display shows viscosity changes during the reaction. The PTFE coated propeller stirrer R 4011 SY (stirrer head diameter 40 millimetres, shaft length 400 millimetres) can be changed tool free via the keyless chuck R 60. The brushless motor (176 W input, 126 W output) runs without carbon brushes and is therefore considered low maintenance.

Vacuum operation down to 3 millibar and usable volume

The stirrer shaft guide SY guide makes the system suitable for vacuum operation down to 3 millibar, for example to degas solvents or to stir viscous media without bubble formation. The materials used are rated for a temperature range from minus 50 to plus 200 °C, the permissible ambient temperature for operation itself is between 5 and 40 °C. The vessel can be used from a fill volume of 30 millilitres, with an immersed temperature probe the usable minimum volume rises to 260 millilitres.

Ergonomic stand system for everyday lab use

The stand is designed for quick replacement of the reactor vessel and its working height can be adjusted to the operator. Clamp, clamp ring and reactor lid follow the same assembly principle across all DN 100 models in the line. Anyone running several EasySyn sizes in parallel benefits from the same handling logic across the whole range.

Starter instead of Advanced: a deliberate choice against extra technology

Unlike the Advanced version, the EasySyn 500 Starter does without the LT 5.40 draining set and without an RS232/USB interface on the stirrer. For labs that mainly want to stir and control temperature without linking the process to a PC, this leaner and more affordable setup is sufficient. An external circulating thermostat with temperature hoses is needed in any case for actually heating or cooling the double jacket, regardless of the chosen version.

500 or 1,000 millilitres: which size fits

The 500 millilitre model and the larger EasySyn 1000 Starter share the stand, reactor lid, DN 100 flange, propeller stirrer R 4011 SY and the EUROSTAR 60 digital stirrer almost entirely, only the reactor vessel itself is sized differently. Anyone working with small, expensive or scarce starting materials, or wanting to secure a method on a small scale first, is better served by the 500 millilitre vessel, where the usable volume starts at just 30 millilitres. If the batch later grows to a litre or more, the 1000 millilitre model reproduces the same setup at a larger scale without having to change the stirrer or the handling logic.

Not included are temperature hoses for connecting an external circulating thermostat, nor the thermostat itself, both are additionally required for temperature controlled operation of the double jacket. The LT 5.40 draining set is part of the EasySyn 500 Advanced only, not of the Starter version.
