Pure water baths up to 100 °C do not always need the full equipment of a stainless steel heating bath circulator with an external pump. A simple, robust immersion circulator with a larger plastic bath is often enough. The IKA Compact Immersion Circulator ICC 100 lite eco 18 (0010013187) combines the ICC 100 lite immersion circulator with an 18 litre plastic bath and covers a working temperature range from room temperature to 100 °C with internal circulation, designed for temperature control of water.

Generous 18 litre plastic bath

The IB 18 eco plastic bath offers a bath opening of 286 x 325 millimetres at a bath depth of at least 150 millimetres, enough area for several vessels at the same time. The external dimensions of the entire system of circulator head, bath and bath bridge are 338 x 584 x 349 millimetres. Since the bath is made of plastic, it is intended exclusively for temperature control of water, not for oils or other heat transfer fluids that could attack the plastic material.

Performance data of the ICC 100 lite circulator head

The circulator head delivers a heating power of 2,000 watts at a working temperature range from room temperature to 100 °C, and with external cooling operating temperatures down to -25 °C can be reached. The temperature stability according to DIN 12876 is ±0.05 kelvin, and a PID controller with PT1000 working and safety probes handles the control. Unlike the ICC 150 lite pro sizes, the ICC 100 lite eco series is designed exclusively for internal circulation in its own bath. A pump for external consumers is not provided in the circulator head.

Operation, display and safety concept

Operation is via a membrane keypad, and the display is an LED display. The adjustable safety circuit ranges from 0 to 110 °C, and visual and audible warning functions as well as low-level protection reliably protect the device and the water fill. The system is classified according to DIN 12876 in safety class III (FL).

Light circulator head with clamp mounting

The circulator head itself weighs 4.2 kilograms at dimensions of 135 x 303 x 180 millimetres and is mounted directly on the bath via a clamp mounting. The IP 21 rating and a permissible ambient temperature range of 5 to 40 °C at up to 80 % relative humidity cover the usual laboratory conditions. The device can be connected to a PC via USB and RS 232.

Difference from the ICC 150 lite pro series

Where the ICC 150 lite pro sizes are equipped with stainless steel baths, an integrated pressure/suction pump for external applications and a working temperature range up to 150 °C, the ICC 100 lite eco series deliberately concentrates on the essentials: a plastic bath, internal circulation only and a working temperature range up to 100 °C. This limitation noticeably lowers the purchase cost and is sufficient whenever neither an external pump nor temperatures above 100 °C nor the use of oils instead of water is required. For all applications that meet these requirements, the ICC 100 lite eco 18 is therefore the more economical alternative to the pro sizes.

Larger bath for parallel sample throughput

With a capacity of 18 litres, the bath offers considerably more area than the smaller eco 8 variant, so several beakers or sample vessels can be temperature-controlled at the same time without the vessels getting in each other's way. The larger liquid volume also acts as a thermal buffer: short-term temperature fluctuations caused by introducing colder or warmer samples are compensated faster in a larger bath than in a small volume. For laboratories with higher sample throughput, this reduces the number of devices needed compared with several small water baths operated in parallel.

Typical applications

As a pure water bath with larger capacity, the ICC 100 lite eco 18 is suitable above all for routine applications with several samples:

• Water baths for routine sample preparation with several vessels at the same time
• Practical courses and training in which an easy-to-use, robust water bath without an external pump is sufficient
• Quality control with requirements for a larger bath volume at consistently low purchase cost
• Incubation and warming applications up to 100 °C in which only water is used as the heat transfer medium
• Operating environments in which a corrosion-resistant plastic bath is preferred to a stainless steel bath
