In the analytical sample preparation of brittle, hard or fibrous matrices, the application of substantial kinetic energy is essential. The IKA MMT 100.1 grinding beaker utilises the process principle of high-speed impact and shock comminution and applies this to a significantly expanded working volume of 100 ml. Designed as a reversible, reusable system, a solid stainless-steel beater rotates at the geometric centre of the chamber. Driven by the magnetic coupling of the IKA Tube Mill base station at up to 25,000 revolutions per minute, the scaling to 100 ml generates intense three-dimensional flow turbulence (vortex). These hydrodynamic vectors continuously force even large sample volumes into the active impact zone. The design as a reusable vessel requires precise metrological cleaning after each batch to physically rule out analytical cross-contamination (carry-over) in large-volume analyses.

Thermomechanical stability and tribological reversibility

The repeated high-speed comminution of large and hard sample quantities induces a significant, cyclic thermodynamic load (exothermic reaction) due to friction and massive wall collisions. The MMT 100.1 grinding chamber is manufactured from a structurally cross-linked, high-performance thermoplastic. This specific macromolecular polymer matrix is engineered to withstand the kinetic impacts of large rock fragments or pellets without undergoing plastic deformation. At the same time, the polymer resists chemical and thermal degradation during repeated mechanical cleaning (dishwasher-safe). However, the rotating drive shaft and the dynamic sealing elements are subject to natural tribological wear under continuous abrasive stress on this macro scale, which makes preventive maintenance essential.

Macro-aerosol containment and system hermeticity

During the grinding of toxic, biohazardous or highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) on a 100-ml scale, the rotor generates increased internal pressure peaks due to the expanded chamber volume. When in operation, the MMT 100.1 grinding beaker functions as a hermetically sealed containment system. The built-in industrial elastomer seals absolutely reliably prevent the escape of respirable fine dust or toxic aerosols into the laboratory atmosphere. To ensure this critical system hermeticity in the long term and prevent a pressure drop, the chamber’s integrity must be process-technically evaluated following numerous rinsing and grinding cycles.

The MMT 100.1 reusable grinding jar is the ideal process engineering solution for laboratories that carry out representative cross-sectional analyses of large sample volumes and have validated cleaning protocols in place. Please note that the dynamic elastomer seals in the rotational axis are subject to wear due to the significant centrifugal and shear forces generated by the 100 ml batch. To prevent a sudden loss of aerosol containment or irregular kinematics, these wear parts must be replaced at regular intervals.
