Maximum efficiency in wet grinding: the IKA MultiDrive BL 2000 mixing vessel
In modern food analysis, agricultural quality control and biological research, representative sample preparation is by far the most critical step for any subsequent analysis. If heterogeneous, water-containing or extremely fibrous source materials are not completely and homogeneously comminuted, the resulting analytical measurements are simply worthless. Particular challenges are posed by samples that are unsuitable for conventional dry grinding because they are too moist, too oily or too temperature-sensitive. It is precisely for this demanding, process-engineering segment that IKA has developed the highly specialised MultiDrive BL 2000 mixing vessel (MPN 0025003961). This robust accessory, designed as a blender, transforms your IKA MultiDrive universal mill into a powerful, high-performance mixer that turns even the toughest and most resistant wet samples into a perfectly homogeneous, analysis-ready suspension in a matter of seconds.
The specialist tool for challenging sample matrices
The strength of the BL 2000 lies in its precise adaptation to so-called wet grinding. Instead of having to go to the trouble of freeze-drying samples, you can process them directly in their original state. According to the manufacturer, the vessel is particularly well-suited to a wide variety of challenging applications: it minces sinewy meat and fatty sausages for food safety testing, homogenises hard soya beans for protein determination, processes tough, moist silage for agricultural feed analysis, and purées fresh vegetables for vitamin or residue analysis. The vessel is supplied with a solid standard blend knife made from high-quality, corrosion-resistant stainless steel. At extremely high speeds, this razor-sharp tool effortlessly penetrates cell walls, cuts through muscle fibres and generates strong hydrodynamic turbulence, guaranteeing absolutely uniform mixing of the sample material.
Enormous capacity for representative composite samples
A common problem in analytical work is the sample size. If only a tiny piece is taken from a large consignment (for example, a silage bale), this sample is rarely representative of the entire consignment. The IKA MultiDrive BL 2000 solves this problem with its enormous maximum usable volume of 2000 millilitres (2 litres). This enormous volume allows you to process large, meaningful cross-sectional samples in a single, rapid batch process. Another major advantage that makes your work easier is that the maximum feed grain size is an impressive 30 millimetres. This means you do not need to spend time pre-cutting your samples into tiny pieces with a scalpel beforehand; coarsely crushed chunks can be placed directly into the mixing vessel, which drastically reduces set-up and preparation times in your laboratory.
Uncompromising hygiene and GLP-compliant cleaning
Wherever meat, biological tissue or fatty samples are handled, the risk of dangerous cross-contamination (carry-over) is ever-present. Even minute traces of protein from the previous sample remaining in the vessel can completely ruin PCR analyses, DNA extractions or chromatographic investigations. IKA has therefore designed the BL 2000 vessel to ensure absolute, uncompromising hygiene. The entire vessel, along with all its components that come into contact with the sample, can be cleaned conveniently and safely in the laboratory dishwasher. The key design feature for deep cleaning is that the stainless steel mixing blade can be completely dismantled in just a few simple steps. This ensures that absolutely no stubborn biofilms or sample residues can become trapped beneath the blades or on the seals (which are made from high-quality PTFE and silicone). This feature is mandatory and non-negotiable in certified laboratories operating in accordance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) or ISO 9001.
System integration and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
As an essential expansion module, the mixing vessel is precisely tailored to the IKA MultiDrive ecosystem. It is fully compatible with both the IKA MultiDrive basic and the state-of-the-art MultiDrive control drive unit. The BL 2000’s housing is made from durable, crystal-clear PCTG plastic, which allows for constant visual monitoring of the grinding process whilst being extremely impact-resistant. With compact dimensions of 180 x 280 x 220 mm and a weight of just 1.25 kg, the vessel is ergonomic to handle and easy to store. By investing in the BL 2000 mixing vessel, you will significantly expand the analytical capabilities of your existing MultiDrive mill. You will eliminate the need to purchase an additional, expensive and space-consuming bench-top mixer, optimise your in-house laboratory processes, reduce your total cost of ownership and ensure consistently excellent sample quality for all wet chemical analyses.

Individual requirements & accessories
To operate this vessel, you will need the heart of the system: the IKA MultiDrive basic drive unit. If you are processing samples that are highly temperature-sensitive and require continuous monitoring of the cold chain, we recommend the sister model, the MultiDrive BL 2000 T, which features an integrated temperature sensor (can only be used in combination with MultiDrive control). The stainless steel mixing blade (BL 2000.1) included in the package can, of course, also be ordered separately as a spare part in the event of wear and tear. Please feel free to contact our expert procurement service at any time for a bespoke configuration of your IKA MultiDrive grinding system.
