Product information "Kern ABP 100-4M analytical balance 120 g / 0.0001 g"
Anyone who needs to read weighed-in portions of standard solutions, formulations or samples to 0.1 mg or 0.01 mg will find seven models in the Kern ABP. The analytical balances weigh up to 320 g, use a single-cell weighing system and have an OLED display, a glass draught shield with three sliding doors and an automatic internal adjustment. Three models read to 0.0001 g (ABP 100-4M, 200-4M and 300-4M). Four models read to 0.00001 g; Kern calls the single-range models ABP 100-5M and 200-5M semi-micro balances. The ABP 100-5DM and 200-5DM are multi-range balances and switch automatically between two weighing ranges as the load increases or decreases.
Short stabilisation time and automatic adjustment
According to Kern, the stabilisation time is 2 s for the models with 0.0001 g and 8 s for the single-range models with 0.00001 g. The multi-range models state both values. The internal automatic adjustment adjusts the balance when the temperature changes by 1 °C or more and additionally every 4 h. This has nothing to do with a calibration certificate, which is available separately (see below).
The minimum sample weight can be stored in the balance or calculated automatically. If less is weighed in, the balance issues a warning message.
Formulating, users and data output
When formulating, the balance numbers the ingredients and prints them with number and weight. A combined tare/print key saves steps. Up to 10 users can be set up with password, menu language and permissions; they can also be called up by barcode. Anyone who is not logged in works in guest mode. Weighing data go to a PC and printer via RS-232 or USB device, also automatically each time the balance comes to rest. A USB keyboard can be used at the USB host port for item numbers and formulations. According to Kern, the balance supports data integrity according to U.S. FDA 21 CFR Part 11, for example with weighing result, sample ID, user name and balance ID.
Functions and accessories in the weighing chamber
Besides weighing, there are piece counting (minimum unit weight 1 mg under laboratory conditions, 10 mg under standard conditions), percentage determination, density determination for liquids and solids, measuring with tolerance range and below-balance weighing. Units are g, mg and ct. The stainless steel weighing pan has a diameter of 91 mm. According to Kern, a multi-function weighing plate is included in the scope of delivery. It reduces the influence of air currents and holds overhanging samples, sample paper, PCR tubes or microcentrifuge tubes in place.
Typical applications
- Pharmaceutical applications: weighing in formulation components with a numbered printout
- Quality control: weight checks with tolerance range and report
- Research and development: sample weighing in the milligram range
- Chemical industry, and industry and production: preparing solutions, density determination
The models with 0.0001 g are sufficient when 0.1 mg is enough. Anyone who regularly weighs in portions below 10 mg will choose a model with 0.00001 g, where the minimum load is 0.001 g instead of 0.01 g. Anyone who switches between small and large portions is well served by the multi-range models: the ABP 100-5DM weighs up to 52 g with a readability of 0.00001 g and up to 120 g with a readability of 0.0001 g, the ABP 200-5DM up to 102 g with a readability of 0.00001 g and up to 220 g with a readability of 0.0001 g.

Conformity assessment and calibration
All models have the verification value e = 0.001 g and accuracy class I. A conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU) is optional (item no. 965-201). It can only be ordered ex works together with the balance; according to Kern, a subsequent conformity assessment is not possible. Kern needs the full address of the installation site for this. A DAkkS calibration certificate (item no. 963-101) can be ordered separately. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.
