Kern ALJ 160-4A analytical balance 160 g / 0.0001 g

The Kern ALJ range comprises six models covering weighing ranges from 82 g to 510 g. Four models have a readability of 0.0001 g (0.1 mg): ALJ 160-4A, 250-4A, 310-4A and 500-4A. The ALJ 200-5DA is a multi-range balance, whilst the ALJ 210-5A is a single-range semi-micro balance; both read to 0.00001 g (0.01 mg). All models feature a graphic display, a recipe memory, an internal automatic adjustment function and a glass draught shield with three sliding doors.

Storing and dispensing formulations

Up to 99 formulations, each with up to 20 ingredients, can be stored in the instrument. Each formulation has a plain-text description and a target value; both appear on the printout. The display guides the user through the input process. When weighing within a tolerance range (checkweighing), a visual and an audible signal indicate whether a sample weight falls within the range; Kern refers to this as portioning, dosing and sorting. The high-stability mode and further filter settings can be selected as dosing aids.

Other functions include percentage determination, density determination, piece counting and a hold function for unstable materials. For piece counting, the minimum piece weight is 1 mg under laboratory conditions and 10 mg under standard conditions.

Operation and weighing chamber

The backlit graphic LCD has a digit height of 15 mm and guides the user through the menu in plain text. The control panel is designed for both left- and right-handed users. The weighing chamber measures 160 x 170 x 225 mm (W x D x H), and the stainless steel weighing pan has a diameter of 80 mm. A safety hood is included in the scope of delivery. Measuring 210 x 340 x 330 mm, the scales are, according to Kern, designed for confined workspaces.

Adjustment and the increment of 0.00001 g

According to the data sheet, the internal automatic adjustment system responds to a temperature deviation of 1.2 °C and a time interval of 3 hours. It does not replace a calibration certificate, which is available separately (see below).

Those weighing to 0.01 mg have a choice of two models. The ALJ 200-5DA weighs up to 82 g to 0.00001 g and automatically switches to the range up to 220 g with a readability of 0.0001 g as the load increases. Once the load is completely removed, it returns to the high-precision range. The ALJ 210-5A reads to 0.00001 g across the entire range up to 210 g; its stabilisation time is 10 s. It comes with the ALJ-A03 ioniser already fitted to neutralise electrostatic charge. For the other models, this ioniser is available as an accessory for permanent installation.

• Complex formulations: up to 20 ingredients per stored formulation
• Material testing: measurement with tolerance range, determination of the density of liquids and solids
• Research and development: weighing to 0.1 mg, or to 0.01 mg with the 5-series models

If you usually weigh items under 82 g and only occasionally place heavier items up to 220 g on the balance, the ALJ 200-5DA is suitable for you. Those who wish to weigh even heavy items consistently to 0.01 mg should choose the ALJ 210-5A. For weighing up to 510 g to 0.1 mg, the ALJ 500-4A is the only option in this range.

Calibration

A DAkkS calibration certificate (item no. 963-101) can be ordered separately. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.

Warranty

According to Kern & Sohn, these devices come with a 3-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
