Kern ALS 250-4A analytical balance 250 g / 0.0001 g

The Kern ALS is an analytical balance with formulation memory that is adjusted using an external weight. There are two models: the ALS 160-4A weighs up to 160 g, the ALS 250-4A up to 250 g; both have a readability of 0.0001 g (0.1 mg). The range of functions is similar to that of the Kern ALJ. The difference lies in the adjustment: the ALS is adjusted using an external weight, whilst the ALJ has an internal automatic adjustment system.

Adjustment using the CAL programme

The CAL adjustment programme sets the accuracy using an external test weight. The data sheet recommends a test weight of 150 g (E2) for the ALS 160-4A and 250 g (E2) for the ALS 250-4A. The test weight is not included in the scope of delivery; it is available separately. Adjustment is not the same as calibration. A calibration certificate is available separately (see below).

Formulation, tolerance range and counting

The internal memory stores complete formulations, including the name and target value of the ingredients. Up to 20 ingredients are possible per formulation, with a total of up to 99 formulations. The name and target value also appear on the printout. When weighing within a tolerance range (checkweighing), upper and lower limit values can be entered; a visual and an audible signal indicate whether the weight is within specification. The high-stability mode and additional filter settings can be selected as dosing aids.

Additional functions include percentage determination, density measurement, piece counting and a hold function for unstable weighing conditions. The minimum piece weight for piece counting is 1 mg under laboratory conditions and 10 mg under standard conditions.

Display, draught shield and installation

The graphic LCD is backlit, with digits 15 mm high. The user interface displays plain text. The glass draught shield has three sliding doors; the weighing chamber measures 160 x 170 x 225 mm (W x D x H) and the stainless steel weighing pan is 80 mm in diameter. When fully assembled, the balance measures 210 x 340 x 330 mm and weighs approx. 7 kg. It is designed for ambient temperatures of 5 °C to 35 °C and relative humidity of up to 80 %.

Both models have the same readability, reproducibility (0.0001 g), linearity (± 0.0003 g) and stabilisation time (4 s). The choice therefore depends on the maximum weighing capacity: up to 160 g or up to 250 g. For those requiring a readability of 0.01 mg, the Kern ALJ range offers models with a readability of 0.00001 g.

Calibration

A DAkkS calibration certificate (item no. 963-101) can be ordered separately. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.

Warranty

According to Kern & Sohn, these devices come with a 3-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
