The Kern CCA is a counting system comprising two balances and a shared indicator. A high-resolution reference balance weighs the individual part, whilst a platform balance from the Kern IFS series weighs the large quantity. The system calculates the number of items based on both of these values. Kern describes it as suitable for counting very small parts in large quantities; the display shows up to 999,999 counted items. Nine models cover quantity balances from 6 kg to 150 kg. Each model can be ordered ex works with a conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU).
Reference balance and quantity balance
The suffix in the model name indicates the reference balance. The -4M models feature the TEWJ 6000-1M-B reference balance (6 kg, readability 0.1 g) and count parts from 100 mg under laboratory conditions. The -5M models feature the TEWJ 600-2M-B (0.6 kg, readability 0.01 g) and count parts from 20 mg. The quantity balance is a model of the IFS series with two weighing ranges: CCA 6K contains the IFS 6K-3M, CCA 10K the IFS 10K-3M, CCA 30K the IFS 30K-3M, CCA 60K the IFS 60K-2M and CCA 100K the IFS 100K-2M. This increases the counting resolution from 60,000 for the CCA 6K-4M to 7,500,000 for the CCA 100K-5M.
Indicator and operation
The indicator has three displays for weight, reference weight and total count, a backlit LCD with 20 mm high digits and 28 keys. It stores 100 items with reference weight, reference quantity and container weight. The reference quantity can be set to 5, 10, 20, 50 or 100; manual reference optimisation gradually improves the average part weight. Further functions are the PRE-TARE function, Net-Total (formulation level A), totalising of counted items, percentage determination, a conversion function and weighing with tolerance range with visual and audible signal. The date and time can be printed out.
Accuracy and adjustment
According to Kern, the reference balance is based on the EWJ series and adjusts itself internally every 2 h on a timer-controlled basis. The data sheet recommends 6 kg (class M1) for adjustment using an external weight. The platform is protected to IP65; the load cell is made of aluminium and is also protected to IP65. The indicator is protected to IP23; its display has no degree of protection.
Connection and power supply
The two balances are connected via an RS-232 Y-cable (approx. 1.5 m), to which a printer can also be connected. RS-232 is fitted as standard. The plug-in mains adaptor (100 V to 240 V, 12 V, 500 mA at the device) is supplied with country adaptors. A lead-acid rechargeable battery (KFB-A01, 6 V, 1.2 Ah) is available as an option for the -4M models. It takes 12 h to charge and, according to the data sheet, lasts for 8 h with the backlight on and 18 h without. The ambient temperature may be between 0 °C and 40 °C, and the relative humidity up to 80 %.

Conformity assessment and calibration
A conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU) is available as an option: item no. 965-229-216 for CCA 6K-4M, CCA 30K-4M, CCA 60K-4M, CCA 60K-5M, CCA 100K-4M and CCA 100K-5M; item no. 965-228-216 for CCA 6K-5M, CCA 10K-5M and CCA 30K-5M. Kern supplies it ex works only together with the system; according to Kern, a subsequent conformity assessment is not possible. To place an order, Kern needs the full address of the installation site. A DAkkS calibration certificate can be ordered separately: item no. 962-129-127 for CCA 6K-4M, CCA 30K-4M, CCA 60K-4M, CCA 60K-5M, CCA 100K-4M and CCA 100K-5M; item no. 962-128-127 for CCA 6K-5M, CCA 10K-5M and CCA 30K-5M. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.
Warranty
According to Kern & Sohn, these devices come with a 3-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
