Kern CCS 6K-6 counting system, reference and quantity scale, 6 kg

The Kern CCS 6K-6 is a counting system comprising two scales: a high-resolution reference scale, the KERN CFS 300-3, and a weighing platform, the KERN KFP 6V20M-A, which acts as a quantity scale. Whilst a compact counting balance such as the Kern CPE 6K-3 determines both the reference weight and the total weight using the same load cell, the CCS 6K-6 separates these two steps. This is particularly useful where very large quantities of very light parts need to be counted as accurately as possible; up to 999,999 pieces can be displayed.

Two scales, one task

The CFS 300-3 reference balance covers a weighing range up to 300 grams, with a readability of 1 milligram, a reproducibility of around 2 milligrams and a linearity of 4 milligrams. It is used to determine the reference weight of a small sub-batch, with significantly greater precision than a single compact balance could achieve. The KFP 6V20M-A weighing platform then takes over the large batch: it covers a weighing range up to 6 kilograms, with a readability of 0.2 grams and a linearity of 0.6 grams. Using the precise reference weight and the total weight of the batch, the system calculates the number of items; up to 999,999 items can be displayed.

When a reference system is worthwhile

The lighter the individual part, the greater the impact the scale’s readability has on counting accuracy. With very small or very light parts, such as small components from electronics manufacturing, fine fasteners or similar bulk materials, a compact counting balance such as the CPE 6K-3 or the Kern CPE 15K-3 will eventually reach its limits, because the reference weight is determined on the same, comparatively coarse load cell as the total batch. The CCS 6K-6 overcomes this by having the reference balance determine the unit weight separately and with significantly greater precision before the quantity balance weighs the large quantity.

Design, materials and degree of protection

The weighing platform measures 230 x 230 x 103 millimetres; the housing is made of plastic, the weighing pan of stainless steel and the load cell of aluminium. The weighing platform is rated to IP65 and the display unit to IP23. Kern specifies no degree of protection for the reference balance. The cable length to the weighing platform is 1.5 metres, whilst the cable length to the display unit is 3 metres. The stabilisation time is 2 seconds, and data is transmitted via an RS-232 interface.

Adjustment

Kern recommends a 6-kilogram adjustment weight of accuracy class F1 for the quantity balance. We can name the appropriate adjustment weight for the reference balance on request.

Typical applications

As a two-balance system, the CCS 6K-6 is suitable wherever large quantities of small or light parts need to be counted with high accuracy, for example during stock-taking in small parts warehouses, incoming goods inspection of large batches, or quantity checks in packaging and electronics manufacturing. Wherever a single compact balance reaches the limits of its resolution, separate reference weighing provides a more reliable result.

Weight and warranty

The system weighs 7 kilograms net. According to Kern & Sohn, this device comes with a 3-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
