The Kern CFS is a counting balance with three displays, 100 item memory locations and a second-balance interface. Six models weigh from 300 g to 50 kg. The CFS 300-3 and the CFS 3K-5 read to 0.001 g and 0.01 g respectively and count parts from a unit weight of 1 mg and 10 mg respectively under laboratory conditions. The CFS 6K0.1, 15K0.2, 30K0.5 and 50K-3 models cover a range from 6 kg to 50 kg with a readability of 0.1 g to 1 g. Kern cites warehouse logistics, production monitoring, quality control, order picking and stocktaking as areas of application.
Counting with three displays
Three displays show weight, reference weight and total piece count at the same time. Reference piece count and a known reference weight can be entered using the keypad. The automatic reference optimisation gradually improves the average value of the unit weight. The counting resolution is specified in the model table; it ranges from 50,000 to 300,000. Depending on the model, the minimum unit weight ranges from 1 mg to 1 g under laboratory conditions. Under standard conditions, the range is 10 mg to 10 g.
Item memory, target values and tolerance
The balance stores 100 items (PLU). With the fill-to-target function, a target piece count or target weight can be programmed; a signal indicates when the target value is reached. When weighing within a tolerance range (checkweighing), an audible and a visual signal indicate whether a value falls within the range. The PRE-TARE function manually subtracts the known weight of a container in advance; according to Kern, this is useful for fill quantity checks. In addition, there are a totalising memory, a conversion function and manual taring, which is possible several times.
Second-balance interface and data connection
The second-balance interface is standard. Kern mentions it for setting up a high-resolution counting system, for example with KERN KFP V20 weighing platforms. In addition, there is the standard RS-232 interface with the KERN Communication Protocol (KCP) and an internal memory. A signal lamp (CFS-A03) is available as an accessory.
Weighing range and design
For the precise counting of small parts, the CFS 300-3 and CFS 3K-5, with a counting resolution of 300,000, are the models of choice. The CFS 300-3 has a round weighing pan (Ø 80 mm) with a draught shield (weighing chamber 155 x 141 x 80 mm) and is 185 mm high. The other five models are 125 mm high. Their weighing pan measures 295 x 225 mm, whilst that of the CFS 50K-3 measures 370 x 240 mm. For containers and cartons, the CFS 15K0.2 (15 kg), CFS 30K0.5 (30 kg) and CFS 50K-3 (50 kg) are available. The linearity is ± 0.2 g for the CFS 6K0.1, ± 0.4 g for the CFS 15K0.2, ± 1 g for the CFS 30K0.5 and ± 2 g for the CFS 50K-3.
Adjustment
The CFS is adjusted using an external weight. Kern specifies the recommended adjustment weights and adjustment points for each model (model table). This does not replace a calibration certificate, which is available separately (see below).
Power supply
The balance operates with a power supply. A lead-acid rechargeable battery (GAB-A04) is optionally available, with a charging time of 14 h and an operating time of 40 h with backlight (70 h without). In rechargeable battery operation, the balance switches off after 3, 5, 15 or 30 min or not at all; this applies to all models except the CFS 30K0.5, for which Kern does not specify an automatic switch-off.

Calibration
A DAkkS calibration certificate can be ordered separately: item no. 963-127 for the CFS 300-3 and CFS 3K-5, item no. 963-128 for the CFS 6K0.1, CFS 15K0.2, CFS 30K0.5 and CFS 50K-3. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.
Warranty
According to Kern & Sohn, the CFS 300-3 comes with a 3-year warranty and the CFS 3K-5, CFS 6K0.1, CFS 15K0.2, CFS 30K0.5 and CFS 50K-3 come with a 2-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
