Product information "Kern EHA 500-2 school balance 500 g / 0.01 g"
The Kern EHA 500-2 is a compact balance for classroom use that also fits easily into laboratories and workshops. It weighs up to 500 g, has a readability of 0.01 g and is only 50 mm high. The stainless steel weighing pan has a diameter of 105 mm and can be quickly wiped clean after weighing.
Designed for teaching, suitable for practical use
Kern lists the areas of application as teaching and training, educational institutions, standard laboratory analyses and counting applications. In biology, chemistry and physics lessons, pupils weigh salts, samples or components. The control panel features five buttons and a high-contrast LCD with 22 mm high digits and backlighting. Rubber feet keep the balance secure on the table.
Anyone looking for a balance for more than just schoolwork will find the EHA 500-2 to be a standard balance for weighing up to 500 g. The balance is too coarse for weights below 0.01 g; precision and analytical balances with finer readability are designed for this purpose.
Accuracy and adjustment
Reproducibility is 0.03 g, linearity ± 0.03 g, and stabilisation time is 3 s. A spirit level and adjustable feet are part of the equipment so that the balance sits level. The CAL programme is used for adjustment, employing an external weight. Kern recommends a 200 g or 500 g weight of class F2 for this purpose. Test weights are not included in the scope of delivery. It takes 120 minutes for the balance to reach its operating temperature; the ambient temperature should be between 5 °C and 40 °C, and the relative humidity should not exceed 80 %.
Power, Units and Counting
The balance runs on the supplied mains adaptor or two AA batteries (1.5 V). According to the data sheet, it has a battery life of approximately 70 hours and switches itself off after 5 minutes. Batteries are not included in the scope of delivery. Weighing is carried out in g, gn, dwt, ct or oz. The balance has a counting function for counting identical items; the minimum item weight is 10 mg under laboratory conditions and 100 mg under standard conditions.
The housing is made of ABS plastic; the balance weighs approximately 0.5 kg net. Measuring 225 x 160 x 50 mm, it takes up little space on the workbench; Kern describes the design as particularly flat.
Typical applications
- Science lessons in biology, chemistry and physics
- Training and practical sessions where many simple balances are required
- Standard weighing in the laboratory, for example for buffer solutions or culture media
- Counting small parts in workshops and goods reception
- Portioning and checkweighing of small quantities
Regulatory information
As an electrical device, the balance falls under the ElektroG. The manufacturer Kern & Sohn GmbH is registered under the WEEE registration number DE 80821200. How to return old appliances is described on the page Environment and disposal.
Frequently asked questions

How do I adjust the EHA 500-2? Using the CAL programme and an external test weight. We recommend a 200 g or 500 g test weight of class F2.
Is the balance suitable for verification? According to the data sheet, this model is not intended for verification. If you require a balance for measurements subject to verification, please enquire before ordering.
Can I use it to count parts? Yes, the balance has a counting function. The minimum part weight is 10 mg under laboratory conditions and 100 mg under standard conditions.
How long is the warranty? According to Kern & Sohn, this device comes with a 2-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded.
