The Kern EW is a precision balance with a tuning fork weighing system for use without conformity assessment. Seven models weigh from 220 g to 12,000 g and read to 0.001 g, 0.01 g or 0.1 g. Accuracy is set using the CAL adjustment programme and an external test weight. Unlike the Kern EG sister series, the EW has no verification values and no internal adjustment via a rotary knob. The stabilisation time is 2 s for six models.
Seven weighing ranges in three groups
The EW 220-3NM, EW 420-3NM and EW 620-3NM models have a readability of 0.001 g, a draught shield and a round weighing pan with a diameter of 118 mm. For the EW 820-2NM, EW 2200-2NM and EW 4200-2NM, the readability is 0.01 g, and the weighing pan is rectangular (170 x 140 mm for the EW 820-2NM, 180 x 160 mm for the other two). The EW 12000-1NM weighs up to 12 kg with a readability of 0.1 g and needs 3 s to stabilise. The choice depends on the largest item to be weighed and on the decimal place to which it is to be read.
Adjustment with an external weight
The CAL adjustment programme sets the accuracy. This requires an external test weight, which is not included in the scope of delivery (see accessories). According to Kern, the balance shows stable temperature behaviour and high corner-load safety. The bar graph capacity display shows how much of the weighing range is already in use.
Functions, connections and power supply
The balance counts pieces, totals counted parts and determines percentages. The units are switchable, including g, ct, lb, oz, dwt and ozt. The backlit LCD has 17 mm high digits; the plastic housing measures 180 x 235 x 75 mm, or 185 x 235 x 165 mm for models with the draught shield fitted. Data go to a printer or PC via the standard RS-232 interface. The plug-in mains adaptor operates at 220 V to 240 V and 50 Hz. A rechargeable battery is optional (charging time 12 h, operating time 12 h with backlight, switch-off after 3 min in rechargeable battery operation).

Calibration
For the EW series, Kern does not list a conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU). A DAkkS calibration certificate can be ordered separately; the item number is listed in the model table. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.

Warranty
According to Kern & Sohn, these devices come with a 3-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
