The Kern FFN is a stainless steel bench balance with IP65 dust and splash protection for use in the food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries. This protection applies only when operating on rechargeable battery power. Ten models weigh from 1.5 kg to 25 kg, with a readability range from 0.2 g to 10 g. Kern describes the housing and weighing plate as being made of stainless steel; the plate measures 233 x 193 mm. An internal rechargeable battery and the power supply are included. Grip recesses on the underside make carrying easier.
Hygiene and protection
Kern states that the balance is suitable for the heightened hygiene requirements in the food, pharmaceutical and chemical industries, as well as for harsh industrial use. The smooth stainless steel surfaces are easy to clean. Kern also states that the FFN supports a quality system in line with HACCP. The complete unit is protected to IP65. The ambient temperature may be between -10 °C and 40 °C.
Ten models, five of which have a conformity assessment
There are two versions available for each weighing range. The models ending in N (FFN 1K-4N, 3K0.5IPN, 6K1IPN, 15K2IPN, 25K5IPN) have a finer readability and display kg and lb. The models with an M (FFN 1K-4NM, 3K1IPM, 6K2IPM, 15K5IPM, 25K10IPM) are intended for conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU). Their readability corresponds to the verification value; the resolution is 2,500 to 3,000 steps; the units are kg and g.
Operation and battery
The balance is operated using three keys, and the backlit LCD display features digits 25 mm high. The internal lead-acid rechargeable battery is included and, according to Kern, runs for up to 50 h without backlight with a charging time of 12 h (30 h with backlight). The plug-in mains adaptor (110 V to 230 V AC) comes with adaptors for EU, UK, US and CH. For the FFN 3K1IPM, 6K2IPM, 15K5IPM and 25K10IPM models, the automatic switch-off function in rechargeable battery mode can be set to 3 min, 5 min or 15 min, or disabled. At around 4 kg the balance is portable, helped by the grip recesses on the underside.

Conformity assessment and calibration
A conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU) is optionally available for models with an M: item no. 965-227 for FFN 1K-4NM and FFN 3K1IPM, item no. 965-228 for FFN 6K2IPM, FFN 15K5IPM and FFN 25K10IPM. It can only be ordered ex works together with the balance; according to Kern, a subsequent conformity assessment is not possible. To place an order, Kern needs the full address of the installation site. A DAkkS calibration certificate can be ordered separately: item no. 963-127 for FFN 1K-4N, FFN 1K-4NM, FFN 3K0.5IPN and FFN 3K1IPM; item no. 963-128 for FFN 6K1IPN, FFN 6K2IPM, FFN 15K2IPN, FFN 15K5IPM, FFN 25K5IPN and FFN 25K10IPM. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.
Warranty
According to Kern & Sohn, these devices come with a 2-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
