The Kern IFS is an industrial counting balance with a mild steel platform and a stainless steel weighing plate, operated via a remote indicator with a numeric keypad. Fifteen models cover weighing ranges from 6 kg to 300 kg, each in two ranges with automatic switching. The platforms measure from 300 x 240 mm to 650 x 500 mm. The counting resolution is up to 60,000 points; for the IFS 10K-3M, IFS 10K-3LM and IFS 10K-4 models, it is up to 75,000. Under laboratory conditions, the minimum unit weight ranges from 100 mg (IFS 6K-3M) to 5 g (IFS 300K-3).
Two weighing ranges
All models are multi-interval or multi-range balances respectively. According to Kern, they automatically switch to the next larger or smaller weighing range and the corresponding readability as the load increases or decreases. For example, the IFS 100K-2M weighs up to 60 kg with a readability of 20 g and up to 150 kg with a readability of 50 g, the IFS 6K-3M up to 3 kg with a readability of 1 g and up to 6 kg with a readability of 2 g. Eight models for conformity assessment
Eight models with M in their name are intended for conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU): IFS 6K-3M, 10K-3M, 10K-3LM, 30K-3M, 60K-2M, 60K-2LM, 100K-2M and 100K-2LM. Their readability corresponds to the verification value, the accuracy class is III, and the minimum load is shown in the table below. The remaining seven models (IFS 10K-4, 30K0.2DL, 60K0.5D, 60K0.5DL, 100K-3, 100K-3L and 300K-3) have no verification value and are not intended for conformity assessment.
Indicator and functions
The display unit has 21 keys with a numeric keypad and three displays for weight, reference weight and total count (digit height 16.5 mm). It stores 100 items. Any quantity can be freely entered as the reference count; manual reference optimisation gradually improves the average part weight. Further functions are totalising of counted items, the peak function and weighing with tolerance range with visual and audible signal. The M models also feature the PRE-TARE function. The balance can output a GLP/ISO protocol with value and time as well as date and time. The KERN Communication Protocol (KCP) is available for querying and remote control.
Platform and installation
The load cell is made of aluminium, is silicone-coated and protected to IP65. According to the data sheet, the complete unit, display and platform do not have IP protection. The spirit level and adjustable feet are used for levelling. The indicator can be tilted and mounted on the wall. Ttands in two heights (IFB-A01, approx. 330 mm, and IFB-A02, approx. 600 mm) are also available.
Power supply
The plug-in mains adaptor (100 V to 240 V, 50/60 Hz, device 12 V, 500 mA) is supplied with adaptors for EU, UK, US and CH. A lead-acid rechargeable battery (6 V, 1.2 Ah) is available as an option. It takes 12 h to charge and, according to the data sheet, lasts for 8 h with the backlight on and 18 h without. The automatic switch-off function in rechargeable battery mode can be set to 3 min or disabled; when connected to the mains, the balance remains on. The ambient temperature may be up to 40 °C; the lower limit is -10 °C for the M models and 0 °C for the other models. The humidity may be up to 80 %.

Conformity assessment and calibration
A conformity assessment under the NAWI Directive (2014/31/EU) is available as an option for the M models: item no. 965-228 for IFS 6K-3M, IFS 10K-3M, IFS 10K-3LM and IFS 30K-3M; item no. 965-229 for IFS 60K-2M, IFS 60K-2LM, IFS 100K-2M and IFS 100K-2LM. It can only be ordered ex works together with the balance; according to Kern, a subsequent conformity assessment is not possible. To place an order, Kern needs the full address of the installation site. A DAkkS calibration certificate can be ordered separately: item no. 963-128 for IFS 6K-3M, IFS 10K-3M, IFS 10K-3LM, IFS 10K-4, IFS 30K-3M and IFS 30K0.2DL; item no. 963-129 for IFS 60K-2M, IFS 60K-2LM, IFS 60K0.5D, IFS 60K0.5DL, IFS 100K-2M, IFS 100K-2LM, IFS 100K-3, IFS 100K-3L and IFS 300K-3. The confirmation of manufacturer specification (969-517) is only available in conjunction with the DAkkS calibration certificate.
Warranty
According to Kern & Sohn, the IFS 10K-3LM, IFS 10K-4, IFS 30K-3M, IFS 30K0.2DL, IFS 60K-2M, IFS 60K-2LM, IFS 60K0.5D, IFS 60K0.5DL, IFS 100K-2M, IFS 100K-2LM, IFS 100K-3, IFS 100K-3L and IFS 300K-3 come with a 3-year warranty and the IFS 6K-3M and IFS 10K-3M come with a 2-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.

The lead-acid rechargeable battery KFB-A01, the working protective cover KFB-A02, the stands IFB-A01 and IFB-A02, the signal lamp (CFS-A03), the RS-232 interface cable (CFS-A01) and the RS-232 Y interface cable (CFS-A04), the plug-in mains adaptors PFB-A02 to PFB-A05 and YKA-11, the ESD earthing plug (YGR-01), the RS232 to USB converter (AFH 13), the RS232 Bluetooth adaptor (YKI-02), the RS232 Ethernet converters (YKI-10, YKI-11), the RS232 WLAN converter (YKI-12), the thermal printer (YKH-01) and the needle printer (YKT-01) are also available. Depending on the platform, Kern also lists the roller conveyors YRO-01, YRO-02 and YRO-03, and for the IFS 100K-2M and IFS 100K-2LM models, the 965-403 cable extension (less than 4 m).
