Kern OBE 124C832 digital microscope set, OBE 124 trinocular with ODC 832 camera, 40x to 400x

Product information "Kern OBE 124C832 digital microscope set, OBE 124 trinocular with ODC 832 camera, 40x to 400x"

The Kern OBE-S series consists of digital microscope sets comprising a trinocular transmitted-light microscope from the OBE range and a permanently mounted camera. According to Kern, the appropriate C-Mount adapter is included in the delivery. There are six sets: the microscope is either the OBE 124 with three objectives or the OBE 134 with four objectives up to 100x. The camera used is the ODC 825 USB 2.0 camera, the ODC 832 USB 3.0 camera or the ODC 241 tablet camera. The model number indicates the combination: OBE 124C825 is the OBE 124 with the ODC 825, while OBE 134T241 is the OBE 134 with the ODC 241.

Microscope: OBE 124 or OBE 134

Both microscopes have a Butterfly tube, inclined at 30° and rotatable through 360°, with an interpupillary distance of 50 to 75 mm and unilateral dioptre adjustment from -5 to +5. The HWF 10x eyepieces have an 18 mm field of view and a high eye point. The nosepiece has four positions. The OBE 124 is fitted with 4x, 10x and 40x achromatic objectives, while the OBE 134 also features a 100x objective. With the 10x eyepiece, this results in a total magnification of 40x to 400x or 40x to 1,000x. The 3 W LED is continuously dimmable, and the Abbe condenser 1.25 has an aperture diaphragm. The field of view ranges from 0.18 to 4.5 mm, and the fine focus mechanism operates in increments of 0.002 mm.

Camera comparison

The ODC 825 and ODC 832 are C-Mount cameras with 5.1 MP and a 1/2.5-inch CMOS sensor. The ODC 825 operates via USB 2.0 at 6.8 to 55 frames per second, while the ODC 832 operates via USB 3.0 at 14.2 to 101.2 frames per second. Both are powered via the USB cable. According to Kern, they are also suitable for dark field, phase contrast and fluorescence applications. Data analysis is carried out on a PC using the free VIS 2.0 PRO or VIS 2.0 LITE software on Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10.

The ODC 241 is a tablet camera with a 5 MP Sony CMOS sensor (1/2.8 inch) and a frame rate of 30 frames per second. It has a display with a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536 pixels, runs on Android and has 128 GB of storage. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, HDMI and a microSD card slot. Kern has developed it to enable simple and direct examination of the sample on screen and recommends it for school pupils and students in training, as well as for laboratory demonstrations.

Design and power supply

The sets with a C-Mount camera measure 360 x 150 x 390 mm, while those with a tablet camera measure 360 x 235 x 540 mm. Kern states that the net weight is approximately 6 kg in both cases. The microscope is powered by a plug-in mains adaptor rated for 100 to 240 V; the device receives 5 V at 1 A. There is a compartment for the power cable on the back. According to Kern, the microscope can also be powered by an external power bank.

Typical applications

  • Haematology and sediment analysis with image documentation on a PC
  • Medical and veterinary practices: recording findings as photographs
  • Training and universities: displaying specimens live on screen
  • Inpatient and outpatient facilities, as well as public health authorities
