Product information "Kern OBN 158 phase contrast microscope, trinocular, Infinity Plan, 40x to 1,000x, 20 W halogen"
The Kern OBN 158 is a trinocular phase contrast microscope with Infinity-Plan optics and 20 W halogen illumination. Kern supplies it as a pre-configured unit: a five-position condenser wheel, a phase contrast condenser and four phase contrast objectives are already fitted. The halogen lamp is manufactured by Philips and is dimmable. As samples, Kern names translucent, thin, low-contrast and demanding specimens such as living mammalian cells, bacteria and tissue.
Phase contrast equipment
The PH universal rotating condenser has a condenser wheel with five positions. It can be centred, has an aperture of 1.25 and an aperture diaphragm. Five objectives are mounted on the nosepiece: 4x (Infinity Plan, aperture 0.11), PH 10x (0.25), PH 20x (0.45, spring-loaded), PH 40x (0.65, spring-loaded) and PH 100x (1.25, oil). All of them carry an anti-fungus coating. With the HWF 10x eyepieces, the total magnification ranges from 40x to 1,000x. According to the data sheet, the field of view measures 0.2 to 5 mm. In addition to phase contrast, bright field is listed as a contrast method. Dark field, polarisation and fluorescence are optional. A centring eyepiece for phase contrast adjustment is included in the scope of delivery.
Köhler illumination with halogen light
The illumination operates according to the Köhler principle with an adjustable field diaphragm. The halogen lamp has a power rating of 20 W and is dimmable; filters are available. The desktop power supply is detachable and has a C14 IEC connector. It operates at 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz and 1.5 A; the microscope is supplied with 12 V at 4 A. The barrel plug is positive on the inside, with an outer diameter of 5.5 mm, an inner diameter of 2.5 mm and a length of 9.5 mm. The Euro plug is included in the delivery; a UK adapter is optional.
Tube, stage and focus
The Siedentopf tube is trinocular, inclined at 30° and rotatable through 360°. According to the data sheet, the beam splitter ratio is 0:100 and 80:20. The interpupillary distance ranges from 50 to 75 mm, and the dioptre adjustment operates on both sides from -5 to +5. The very large mechanical stage is operated with an ergonomic coaxial coarse and fine focus control that works from both sides. The fine focus mechanism operates in increments of 0.002 mm, and torque control is provided. A C-Mount adapter is required to connect a camera. The microscope measures 390 x 200 x 400 mm and has a net weight of approx. 10 kg.
Typical applications
- Haematology, urology, gynaecology and dermatology: unstained cells
- Microbiology, parasitology and immunology
- Pathology, oncology and entomology
- Water analysis, sewage treatment works and breweries
- Veterinary practices, as well as inpatient and laboratory medical facilities, public health authorities and universities
