The Kern ODC 881 is an eyepiece camera with 5.1 megapixels and a USB 3.0 connection. It replaces one of the microscope’s eyepieces and transmits the image to a computer. Power is supplied via the USB cable. Compared to the ODC 874, which has 3.1 MP and USB 2.0, it has a higher pixel count and a faster interface. Measuring 56 x 32 x 32 mm and weighing 0.45 kg, it is slightly longer but just as light.
Insertion into the eyepiece tube
Remove one eyepiece and insert the camera into the eyepiece tube using the plug-in connection. The standard tube diameter is 23.2 mm. With the two eyepiece adapters supplied, the camera also fits into tubes with diameters of 30.0 mm and 30.5 mm. Further adapters are available as the ODC-A8106 (Ø 23.2 to 30 mm) and the ODC-A8107 (Ø 23.2 to 30.5 mm). You should check before purchasing whether the tube of your microscope matches one of these dimensions.
Sensor and frame rate
The Aptina CMOS colour sensor has a format of 1/2.8 inch (5.18 x 3.89 mm) with pixels measuring 2 x 2 µm and uses a rolling shutter. According to the data sheet, the frame rate is 20 frames per second for all three resolutions mentioned: 2,592 x 1,944, 1,280 x 960 and 640 x 480. The data sheet does not specify an exposure time for the ODC 881.
Software and PC
Analysis is carried out using the Microscope VIS 2.0 PRO (OXM 902) or VIS 2.0 LITE software, which, according to Kern, are free of charge. The data sheet lists Windows 8, 10 and 11. The computer requires a quad-core CPU (x64) running at 2.5 GHz, 8 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD, a graphics card supporting DirectX 12 and a 13-inch Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display. A suitable port on the computer is required for the USB 3.0 interface.
Power
The camera draws 5 V at 180 mA via USB. The supplied USB cable is 1.5 m long. It may be stored at temperatures between -5 °C and 40 °C.

Warranty
According to Kern & Sohn, this device comes with a 2-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
