Kern OIV 345 digital video microscope, 11.6-inch HD display (PC-free)

Product information "Kern OIV 345 digital video microscope, 11.6-inch HD display (PC-free)"

The Kern OIV 345 is a video microscope without an eyepiece. The camera and optics are housed in a head mounted on a mechanical column stand, and the image appears on a built-in 11.6-inch display. It is operated using the supplied wireless USB mouse; a computer is not required for operation. Kern describes it as a video microscope with axial optics for digital stereomicroscopy, which displays samples clearly on the screen.

Display instead of eyepiece

The LCD measures 11.6 inches with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (HD) and, according to the brochure, can be tilted from 0 to 45°. It is made of toughened glass and has no edges, which makes cleaning easier. The display unit measures 275 x 170 x 12 mm. According to Kern, the menu languages include German, English, French, Italian and Russian. The integrated camera software captures images and videos, processes and documents them, and takes measurements.

Click-stop zoom

The zoom range is from 0.7x to 4.5x, with a zoom ratio of 6.4:1. It also has a fixed 0.5x objective. The data sheet specifies a standard total magnification range of 15.96x to 102.6x, with a field of view measuring 2.3 to 14.77 mm. The zoom wheel has an integrated click-stop that locks into defined steps. According to Kern, this helps with selecting the magnification and calibrating the documentation functions in the software. Torque control is provided.

Camera and lighting

The camera has a 5 MP Sony CMOS sensor in 1/2.8-inch format and delivers 60 frames per second; it uses a rolling shutter. The light comes from a 3 W LED ring in incident light mode, which can be dimmed continuously. The contrast method is bright field. The working distance is 100 mm, and the maximum specimen height is 110 mm. The mechanical stand has a column height of 330 mm; focusing is carried out via a coarse focus mechanism.

Storage, connections and PC software

Recordings can be saved to the included 32 GB USB stick or to a microSD card. Connectivity options include HDMI, two USB 2.0 ports and a microSD card slot. An additional monitor can be connected via HDMI, allowing the live feed to be displayed on two devices. The image can be viewed and analysed on a PC or laptop via USB; according to Kern, the S-VIEWER (OXM 904) software is available to download free of charge for this purpose. The data sheet lists the following system requirements: an Intel Core i3 or higher CPU, or an AMD Ryzen 5 or higher CPU; 8 GB of RAM; a 128 GB SSD; a graphics card (the data sheet names NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 and AMD Radeon RX 6600); and a 13-inch Full HD display running at 2.5 GHz.

Power supply and dimensions

The desktop power supply is detachable, has a C14 IEC connector and operates at 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz; the device receives 12 V at 2,000 mA. The power cable is 2.5 m long. The unit measures 320 x 260 x 450 mm and has a net weight of approx. 4.4 kg. It may be stored at temperatures between -5 °C and 40 °C.

Typical applications

  • Quality control and materials testing: jointly assessing solder joints and component edges on the display
  • Electronics and semiconductor industry
  • Education and research: several people view the same image
  • Mineralogy and tissue preparation
  • Detection of parasites
