The Kern OIV-9 are two video microscopes without eyepiece on a universal stand with an articulating arm. The image appears on a built-in 11.6-inch display; the camera has 5 megapixels and no computer is required. The arm allows for greater working distances and can be slid to one side when space is needed. The only difference between the two models is the mounting method: the OIV 901 is clamped to the edge of a table using a clamp, while the OIV 902 is screwed onto the tabletop. This requires drilling a hole.
Articulated arm with clamp or screws
The universal stand has a column height of 470 mm and an articulating arm 755 mm long. According to the data sheet, the mounting point on the stand has a diameter of 37 mm. The clamping device is included as part of the scope of delivery for the OIV 901. With the OIV 902, the stand is screwed into place. If you move the unit around frequently or do not want to drill a hole in the tabletop, choose the OIV 901. If you wish to install it permanently, choose the OIV 902.
Display and zoom
The LCD measures 11.6 inches at 1,920 x 1,080 pixels (HD), the display unit 280 x 170 x 12 mm. According to the brochure, the display is made of tempered glass with no edges. The zoom ranges from 0.7x to 4.5x with a ratio of 6.4:1, and there is also a fixed 0.5x objective. The data sheet specifies a standard total magnification of 15.96x to 102.6x and a field of view of 2.3 to 14.77 mm. The zoom wheel has a click-stop. The working distance is 100 mm. Focusing is achieved via a coarse focus mechanism with torque control.
Camera and lighting
The camera has a 5 MP CMOS sensor with a 1/2.8-inch format and delivers 60 frames per second with rolling shutter. The light comes from a 3 W LED ring in incident light mode, which can be dimmed continuously. The contrast method is bright field.
Storage, connections and PC software
The video microscope features an HDMI port, two USB 2.0 ports and a microSD card slot. A 32 GB USB stick and a wireless USB mouse are included in the scope of delivery. A second monitor can be connected via HDMI, allowing the live image to be displayed on two devices. The image can be viewed on a PC or laptop via USB; according to Kern, the S-VIEWER (OXM 904) software is available to download free of charge. According to the data sheet, it requires an Intel Core i3 or higher CPU, or an AMD Ryzen 5 or higher CPU, 8 GB of RAM, a 128 GB SSD, a graphics card (the data sheet names NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 and AMD Radeon RX 6600), and a 13-inch Full HD display.
Power and dimensions
The desktop power supply is detachable, has a C14 IEC connector and operates at 100 to 240 V at 50/60 Hz; the device receives 12 V at 2,000 mA. The power cable is 2.5 m long. Kern lists the dimensions as 320 x 260 x 450 mm. The unit may be stored at temperatures between -5 °C and 40 °C.

Warranty
According to Kern & Sohn, these microscopes come with a 3-year warranty. Kern grants 3 years on products with a list price of €500 or more and 2 years on products below that and on components; wear parts such as batteries and rechargeable batteries are excluded. Warranty repairs are carried out by Kern or by a Kern dealer.
