KERN OPO 185: The flexible, high-end polarising microscope for professionals

The KERN OPO 185 (MPN OPO 185) is the flagship model of the Professional Line POL. It has been specially developed for demanding analyses of materials with optical anisotropy, such as those encountered in mineralogy, petrography, crystallography and materials testing. This instrument impresses with its enormous flexibility: it combines powerful LED reflected and transmitted light illumination with high-quality infinity optics. Whether transparent thin sections or opaque ores – the OPO 185 delivers razor-sharp, high-contrast images.

Maximum power: 5W LED & 5-position objective turret

Unlike basic models, the OPO 185 features two extremely bright 5-watt LED illuminators.

  • Reflected light: Ideal for opaque specimens.
  • Transmitted light: For classic transparent specimens. Both units are infinitely dimmable and ensure long-lasting, colour-faithful illumination (Köhler illumination in transmitted light with an adjustable Abbe condenser 0.9/0.13 ‘Swing Out’). The 5-position objective turret is fitted with five specialised, tension-free Infinity Plan objectives (4x, 10x, 20x, 40x, 50x), which cover an enormous magnification range.

Fully equipped for polarisation analysis

The KERN OPO 185 leaves nothing to be desired when it comes to crystal optical examinations:

  • Bertrand lens: Permanently integrated and focusable for konoscopy (observation of axial images).
  • Compensators: A complete set of sliders (lambda, lambda/4, quartz wedge) is included to determine phase differences.
  • Precision stage: The large specimen stage is mounted on ball bearings, rotates through 360° and features 1° graduations as well as 6' fine graduations with a locking function.

Trinocular tube for documentation

The Siedentopf tube is trinocular. This means you can observe comfortably with both eyes (30° viewing angle, dioptre adjustment on both sides) whilst simultaneously connecting a microscope camera via the third optical path. This makes the OPO 185 the perfect workstation for laboratories that produce reports or conduct training sessions.
