Kern ORL 94BS digital refractometer, Brix 0 to 94 %, nD, benchtop unit

The Kern ORL 94BS is a digital benchtop refractometer with two scales: Brix from 0 to 94 % and refractive index nD from 1.3330 to 1.5290. The instrument measures by total internal reflection on a sapphire prism. Automatic temperature compensation (ATC) converts the result to the reference temperature. The measured value is shown digitally on the colour display.

Measuring range and accuracy

The Brix scale ranges from 0.0 to 94.0 % with a readability of 0.1 % and an accuracy of ± 0.1 %. The refractive index scale covers 1.3330 to 1.5290 nD, with a readability of 0.0001 nD and an accuracy of ± 0.0002 nD. The measuring temperature is between 0 and 40 °C. Averaging over 15 measurements is possible.

Prism and sample well

The measuring prism is made of sapphire and the sample well of stainless steel; a prism cover is part of the instrument. A measurement needs 0.3 to 0.4 ml of sample, which is applied with the supplied pipette. Kern points out that no liquid may enter the housing. After measuring, the prism and sample well are cleaned with a soft cloth, and sample residues should be removed promptly.

Protection rating

The instrument has protection rating IP43. It protects against solid foreign objects of 1 mm and above and against spraying water, but not against water jets or immersion. The refractometer is not designed to be rinsed under running water.

Calibration

The instrument is calibrated with distilled water, which the user provides. Kern recommends calibrating on commissioning, after strong shocks and after longer transport. ISO calibration is available as an optional service (item no. 961-290).

Power supply and interface

The instrument has an internal battery compartment for the rechargeable battery. The charger and USB connection cable are part of the scope of delivery; the power supply operates at 100 to 240 V and 50/60 Hz. A USB 2.0 interface is available. The instrument switches itself off automatically after 3 minutes.
