Product information "Kern OZL 463 Stereo Zoom Microscope, Binocular, 0.7x-4.5x, LED Reflected and Transmitted Light"
Anyone working on circuit boards, components or small workpieces who simply wants to assess the result with the naked eye does not need a microscope with a camera output. The Kern OZL 463 from the OZL 46 series is designed for just that: a binocular stereo zoom microscope with a zoom range of 0.7x to 4.5x, LED reflected light and LED transmitted light on a column stand. With the standard 10x eyepieces, this gives a total magnification of 7x to 45x.
Optics and field of view
The optical system is a Greenough system, producing a three-dimensional image. The field of view has a diameter of 28.6 mm at the lowest magnification and is still 4.4 mm at 4.5x. The working distance is 105 mm; specimens may be up to 140 mm high. Kern specifies a maximum resolution of 0.0037 mm. The HWF 10x eyepieces have a 20 mm field of view and a high eye point. The tube is inclined at 45 degrees and can be rotated; the interpupillary distance ranges from 55 to 75 mm, and the dioptre adjustment operates on both sides. Focusing is achieved via a coarse focus knob.
Illumination and stand
The microscope features reflected light and transmitted light, each with a 3-watt LED. Both light sources can be dimmed independently, allowing dark circuit boards to be illuminated from above and transmitted-light specimens from below as required. The column stand has a base area of 290 x 240 mm, whilst the head mount has a diameter of 76 mm. Kern points out that the head is detachable from the stand and can be integrated into other modular systems, such as a universal stand. The power supply is built-in (100 to 240 V, detachable power cable, protection class I).
Which OZL is suitable
Three Stereo Zoom models from our range are very similar.
| OZL 463 (this model) | Binocular, 0.7x to 4.5x, working distance 105 mm, specimen height 140 mm, 4.2 kg |
| OZL 466 | Trinocular, 0.7x to 4.5x, working distance 105 mm, specimen height 140 mm, 4.6 kg |
| OZL 456 | Binocular, 0.75x to 5x, working distance 113 mm, specimen height 45 mm, 4.6 kg |
The difference compared to the OZL 466 is the third tube outlet for a camera. The OZL 456 magnifies up to 50x and has a greater working distance, but can only accommodate specimens up to 45 mm in height. For tall specimens at magnifications from 7x to 45x, the OZL 463 is the right choice.
Typical applications
Kern lists schools, training workshops, testing centres and laboratories as typical applications for the OZL-46 series. These are complemented by training centres, workshops and assembly and repair workstations, for example in the electronics industry.

Frequently asked questions
Does the OZL 463 have a camera mount? No, the tube is binocular. The trinocular OZL 466 is available for use with a camera.
What is the total magnification of the microscope? 7x to 45x, comprising the 0.7x to 4.5x zoom range and the 10x eyepieces. Additional 15x, 20x and 25x eyepieces, as well as attachment lenses, are available as accessories.
What is the maximum height of a specimen? Up to 140 mm.
Do I need a power supply unit? No, the power supply is built into the unit. A power cable is sufficient.
