Kern OZL 466 Stereo Zoom Microscope, Trinocular, 0.7x-4.5x, LED Reflected and Transmitted Light

Product information "Kern OZL 466 Stereo Zoom Microscope, Trinocular, 0.7x-4.5x, LED Reflected and Transmitted Light"

The Kern OZL 466 is a trinocular stereo zoom microscope on a column stand, designed for specimens with spatial depth, such as circuit boards or components. The zoom is continuously adjustable from 0.7x to 4.5x; with the 10x eyepieces, this results in a total magnification of 7x to 45x. Reflected light and transmitted light are provided by two separately dimmable LED sources, and the third tube outlet accommodates a camera.

Zoom wheel with detents and field of view

The zoom wheel has an integrated click-stop mechanism. It locks into defined magnification steps so that a setting selected once can be reproduced for the next specimen. The zoom range corresponds to a ratio of 6.4:1. The field of view measures 28.6 mm in diameter at the lowest magnification and shrinks to 4.4 mm at 4.5x. Kern specifies a maximum resolution of 0.0037 mm. The working distance is 105 mm; samples may be up to 140 mm high, meaning that even a populated circuit board or a larger workpiece will still fit beneath the head. The optical system is a Greenough system with two separate beam paths; the image is three-dimensional.

Eyepiece side and adjustment

The tube is inclined at 45 degrees and can be rotated. The interpupillary distance can be adjusted from 55 to 75 mm, and the dioptre adjustment operates on both sides. HWF 10x eyepieces with a 20 mm field of view and high eye point are fitted as standard in the tube, so spectacle wearers can view the image even whilst wearing spectacles. Kern offers accessories including 15x, 20x and 25x eyepieces, as well as a 10x eyepiece with a scale (0.1 mm). Focus is adjusted via a coarse focus knob.

Camera operation with a 50:50 optical path

The optical path is split 50:50 between the eyepieces and the camera output. Kern cites this as suitable for documentation, live image transmission and precise inspection and soldering work. Users who wish to assess the image through the eyepiece whilst simultaneously capturing it do not need to switch between the two operating modes. C-mount adaptors with 1x, 0.3x and 0.5x magnification are available for connection, as well as an eyepiece adaptor for microscope cameras. Suitable cameras from Kern include the ODC 825, ODC 832, ODC 852, ODC 874 and ODC 881 models. Those who wish to view images, take measurements and save data on a tablet can use the ODC 241 tablet camera. We stock the ready-assembled set with the tablet camera as the OZL 464T241.

Column stand, lighting and power

The base of the column stand measures 290 x 240 mm, whilst the holder for the microscope head has a diameter of 76 mm. Kern points out that the head can be removed from the stand and integrated into other modular systems, such as a universal stand. The reflected light and transmitted light sources each have a power of 3 watts; both sources can be dimmed separately. Stand inserts in frosted glass and black and white, each 95 mm in diameter, are included. The power supply is built-in; the input voltage is 100 to 240 V, and the unit is connected via a detachable power cable (Protection Class I).

OZL 466 or OZL 463

The OZL 463 has the same optics, the same lighting and the same column stand, but features a binocular head without a camera output and weighs 4.2 kg instead of 4.6 kg. Anyone who is certain they will not be connecting a camera will find the OZL 463 sufficient. If you wish to document images or cannot yet rule out the possibility of doing so, choose the OZL 466.

Typical applications

Kern cites schools, training centres and workshops, testing centres and laboratories, as well as assembly and repair workstations, for example, in the electronics industry, as typical applications for the OZL 46 series.

Frequently asked questions

What is the magnification of the OZL 466? The zoom range is from 0.7x to 4.5x. With the standard 10x eyepieces, this gives a total magnification of 7x to 45x.

Can I connect a camera? Yes, the tube is trinocular. The optical path is split 50:50, so the eyepieces and camera can be used simultaneously. A C-mount adapter is required for connection.

How tall can samples be? Up to 140 mm, with a working distance of 105 mm.

Can the incident and transmitted light be controlled separately? Yes, both 3 W LED sources can be dimmed independently of one another.
