Product information "Liebherr SFFfg 5501 laboratory freezer with drawers, ignition-source-free interior, 310 l, 091649251"
For those who wish to freeze large quantities of flammable substances in the laboratory in an ignition-source-free manner, whilst organising them systematically by sample type, the Liebherr SFFfg 5501 Model 740 offers a variant with eight additional drawers instead of mere storage shelves. The safety features remain unchanged: according to the type plate, the interior is free from ignition sources. The installation of the drawers reduces the usable net volume from 394 to 310 litres, as the guide rails and drawer sides themselves take up space; the gross volume of 499 litres remains unchanged.
Eight drawers for organised sample separation
Instead of five open shelves, the freezer compartment features eight plastic drawers, more compartments than in the standard version. For laboratories that need to store larger quantities of different substance classes neatly separated from one another, such as different groups of solvents or batches from different projects, this offers a practical advantage over open shelves. Particularly with the larger 5501 model, with its higher gross volume of 499 litres, a more refined compartmentalisation makes a noticeable difference in day-to-day use, as more individual batches or substance classes can be accommodated simultaneously without them coming into contact or mixing on open shelves.
Safety: ignition-source-free interior (according to the type plate)
The ignition-source-free interior also makes the drawer version of the SFFfg 5501 a suitable choice for laboratories that need to store flammable solvents, chemicals or other substances where no ignition sources are permitted inside the unit. Certification according to IEC 60068-3, IEC 61010-1, IEC 61010-2-011 and IEC 61326-1 applies to this version in the same way as for the standard variant, as do the ISO 5 cleanroom class according to EN ISO 14644-1 and the GMP Class B documented in the product data sheet.
Technology and cooling capacity
The temperature is displayed digitally on the outside and can be set within a range of -9 °C to -30 °C, with a permitted ambient temperature of +10 °C to 35 °C, identical to the standard version. SmartFrost refrigeration technology ensures even temperature distribution inside the unit, even with the additional drawers. In the event of a fault, the unit issues visual and audible warnings; via a retrofittable Wi-Fi/LAN interface, the freezer can be integrated into an existing laboratory network if required.
Ease of use and installation
The antimicrobial handle with integrated opening mechanism makes operation easier, even when wearing gloves; the door hinge is on the right but can be reversed. With external dimensions of 168.4 x 74.7 x 76.9 cm (H x W x D), identical to the standard model, and a net weight of 99.20 kg, the unit is designed for a fixed installation in the laboratory. The power cable is approximately 3 metres long; a standard laboratory power supply of 220 to 240 V and 2.0 A is sufficient. Defrosting is carried out manually.
Durability and energy efficiency
With an annual energy consumption of 516 kWh, the drawer version remains just as economical in continuous operation as the standard model; according to the manufacturer’s specifications, the additional drawers have no effect on energy consumption. The robust steel housing and the plastic inner container are designed for continuous operation; the net weight of 99.20 kg and the sturdy construction point to long-lasting use in a professional laboratory environment.
Manufacture and positioning within the product range
The drawer version of the SFFfg 5501 is also manufactured at the Liebherr plant in Lienz, Austria, and forms part of the Performance segment of Liebherr’s laboratory equipment range. A separate product data sheet is available for the 740 version, which details the compartment layout with eight drawers and, together with the shared operating instructions for the SFFfg series, provides a clear basis for internal approvals and tenders. Anyone who already has a separate, ignition-source-free laboratory refrigerator and is looking for additional freezer capacity that can be divided into organised compartments will find this model a suitable addition.
Typical areas of application
The drawer version is particularly suitable for laboratories with a high volume of samples that wish to store flammable substances not only in an ignition-source-free manner but also organised by substance class or project, for example, where several research groups use the same unit.
- Deep-freeze storage of large quantities of flammable solvents requiring organised compartmentalisation
- Multiple research groups or projects requiring separate sample storage within the same unit
- Pharmaceutical and life sciences facilities requiring ignition-source-free deep-freeze storage
- A supplement to an existing laboratory fridge where there is a need for separate, organised freezing capacity
