For those in the laboratory who wish to organise and separate larger quantities of statically cooled samples by substance type, the Liebherr SFFsg 5501 version 740 offers a variant with eight additional drawers and two additional wire baskets instead of plain shelving. The installation of the drawers reduces the usable net volume from 394 to 310 litres, as the guide rails and drawer sides themselves take up space; the gross volume of 499 litres remains unchanged. Externally, the unit is no different from the standard version; only the internal layout changes.

Eight drawers and two wire baskets for flexible compartment organisation

Instead of five open storage shelves, the freezer compartment features eight plastic drawers, supplemented by two half-width wire baskets. This combination allows for a more precise compartmentalisation than in the standard version, for example to separate smaller sample quantities in the wire baskets from larger stocks in the drawers. For laboratories with a high volume of samples and a need for organised storage, this offers a practical advantage over open shelves. This combination of drawers and wire baskets is available in our range only in this version of the SFFsg/SFFfg series.

Technology and cooling capacity

Static cooling ensures an even temperature distribution with minimal air movement inside the unit. The temperature is displayed digitally on the outside and can be set within a range of -9 °C to -30 °C, with a permitted ambient temperature of +10 °C to 35 °C, identical to the standard version. SmartFrost refrigeration technology ensures an even temperature distribution inside the unit, even with the additional drawers and baskets. In the event of a fault, the unit issues visual and audible warnings; via a retrofittable Wi-Fi/LAN interface, the freezer can be integrated into an existing laboratory network if required, for example to centrally document temperature trends.

Certification: differs from the standard version

According to the manufacturer, a reduced list of certifications is documented for this version with drawers: IEC 61010-2-011 and IEC 61326-1, two standards fewer than for the standard version with shelves (IEC 60068-3, IEC 61010-1, IEC 61010-2-011, IEC 61326-1). Laboratories that strictly require certification to IEC 60068-3 or IEC 61010-1 should take this difference into account before ordering and, if necessary, opt for the standard version.

Ease of use and installation

The antimicrobial handle with integrated opening mechanism facilitates operation even when wearing gloves; the door hinge is on the right but can be reversed. With external dimensions of 168.4 x 74.7 x 76.9 cm (H x W x D), identical to the standard version, and a net weight of 99.40 kg, the unit is designed for a fixed installation in the laboratory. The unit operates at 220 to 240 V with a current consumption of 2.0 A; a standard laboratory power supply is therefore sufficient. Defrosting is carried out manually.

Durability and energy efficiency

With an annual energy consumption of 501 kWh, the drawer version remains economical in continuous operation, slightly lower than the standard version’s consumption of 516 kWh per year. The robust steel housing and the plastic inner container are designed for continuous operation; the net weight of 99.40 kg and the sturdy construction speak in favour of long-lasting use in a professional laboratory environment.

Manufacturing and documentation

The version with drawers and wire baskets is also manufactured at the Liebherr plant in Lienz. A separate product data sheet is available for this version, documenting both the compartment layout and the reduced certification list, supplemented by the common operating instructions for the SFFsg series. Anyone requiring the full certification list for internal approval or a tender should check before ordering whether the standard version with shelves is the more suitable choice.
